How does getattr come into use?

I am very close to understanding how this piece of code works shown below

Now, my focus is

def play(self):
        next = self.start

        while True:
            print "\n--------"
            room = getattr(self, next)
            next = room() 


and

a_game = Game("central_corridor")
a_game.play()


Now, I am guessing the getattr is the function which allows for the next room to load. What confuses me is why is self there and how does this function search for the next room.

getattr is a function that takes an object and the name of an attribute and returns the value of that attribute on that object. So if the object o has an attribute called x with the value 42 then getattr(o, "x") will return 42 just like o.x would.

In this case the attributes in question are methods. That is next contains the name of the method, getattr is used to get that method from its name and then on the next line the method is called and its return value is the name of the method that should be called next. self is needed because it's the object that the methods are defined on.

Of course the whole getattr business could be avoided if instead of returning the name of the next method, each method would return the next method directly (e.g. return self.the_bridge instead of return "the_bridge").

For the last two lines you pointed out:

a_game = Game("central_corridor")
# The above creates an instance of the class Game and saves it in the variable a_game. This results in the __init__ mathod of the Game class being calles with "central_corridor" as its parameter.

a_game.play()
# Now call the play() method from the instance we created above.
