However, if the money you earn is an allowance from mommy and daddy, then you're right. it isn't yours. And if they're giving you more than $20/week for taking out the trash, mowing the lawn, and lying on the couch, they need smacked in the head.

When I was young I got like $3-$5 for doing some chores around the house. When I got older, the money went away, but I still had chores because "chores" are what you do to help out your family who provides you with food, a roof, clothing and the things you want/need. There were other things I could do for money, but it was harder work, or babysitting my sister once I got older. When I was old enough to work, I worked at a video store, and yeah, I needed a school work permit (and I still don't understand why).

I biked to work after school or on the weekends for a few months before my dad felt I was responsible enough to have my first car. He paid for the car outright and then made me use the money from work to pay him back as well as pay for my gas, maintenance and insurance. After paying him back without being late for approx half the price of the car, one of my Christmas or Birthday presents was him forgiving the rest of the cost. My parents always tried to make sure I knew the value of a dollar, knew what it meant to work for what I wanted.

My school had a "class" where you got something like a work permit. But it wasn't for the benefit of getting to work, it was for the benefit of getting your 7th period called "work" and you actually got an elective credit for it and left school early.

You had to work a certain number of hours a week, and your employer had to sign off on a performance report each week.

I wouldn't call it a "permit" though...

Nah, this thing was basically like a sheet I had to have the school sign saying I was allowed to work.

I guess its a state dependant thing. Since I'm in Ohio....

Ohio Work Permit for Minors

It looks like the Work Permit is also protecting the minor from certain circumstances too. I did not realize that. I had also forgotten that there was a requirement to have a physical. Interesting that it made it so that I couldn't have my wages withheld for just about any reason.

It just bothers me that I have to rely on my parents even to protect the things I work for.

But you just said that you weren't ready to be on your own yet. You want to enjoy the protection of being a minor, but there's just no way to pick and choose. In a country of over 300 million people, we gotta keep shit as cut and dry as possible. If you are living at home and a minor, you still have the same rights (externally) as everyone else (for the most part), but some of those protections and permissions have to come through the parents. The only real difference is that you have people with a BOATLOAD more experience than you in charge of some of that. Enjoy it man, having no safety net isn't all kittens and candycanes...

I'm 17. I'm young, inexperienced, and I haven't contributed very much to society. But I'm not stupid. Why is it that some homeless guy who has wasted 35 years more than I have is allowed to vote and own property?

Kind of answered your own question, if you think about it.

Just because they dig for coal doesn't mean they can't have possessions!
