I read that article a long time ago. They took the fan AND heatsink OFF. That should never happen. I move my machine around all day, and never have even had something close to that occur. I don't pretend that an Athlon isn't hot, that's why it has the fan in the first place.

Also, wtf is wrong with you about AMD? I don't hate Intel just because I happen to own a couple AMD chips (I also have one P2 in the house). If I could afford to spend the money for an Intel CPU, I'd even consider buying another one. People who senselessly hate any one product/company/category are the easiest to rip off. Capitalism means going with what does what you need for the smallest amount, use it to your advantage.

are you saying it's justified then... that you can burn up a processor or two and still be "ok" with it since you still paid less than a P4?  well... perhaps.  i wouldn't buy a P4 either...

Vetritus03, no, I'm not saying that it's ok for the CPU to go up in smoke. I'm saying it's not the end of the world if it does, because it's very inexpensive. Athlons don't cook unless you take the heatsink off, so don't take it off.

My point there was that Intel's flagship CPU's are always extremely overpriced.

i'm not against AMD... i agree they they run faster... errr... out perform intel chips running at faster clock speeds.  i think i said before that i remember back in the day when AMD and cyrix couldn't perform at all much less compete with an intel chip.  maybe i like intel since they're so in bed with M$.  i mean M$ designed everything they did around intel chips.  so why not?

they are overpriced.  ALWAYS... it's like Nike.  Nikes aren't any better than Airwalks.  in fact i DON'T buy Nikes... i don't even buy Airwalks.  it's all a matter of preference.  adn i would still have posted the article if the intel chips would have smoked out too.  maybe intel is playing it safe... doing all this extra stuff for protection and that's why the chips aren't as good as they could be.  who knows?

and anyone whos had anything better than a 486DX2 has known NOT to take the heatsinks off.

You're one confusing person. Everything you say has the Intel fanboy slant, but when you reply to a post, you seem neutral.

Also: Intel being in bed with Microsoft would be a huge reason for me _not_ to buy their chips :).

i'm pretty sure that this was a 'what if' scenerio, like Maximum PC's article last year on what not to do to your PC (submerge it in water when on (a TRS-80 could take it, so long as it was off ;)), or fill the case w/fire-retardant foam.)  just take the fan off your PSU & see what happens!

personally, this wouldn't change my mind 'bout AMD at all (better (?), cheaper, faster (?)), but i might wanna include a secondary fan running off my baybus, just in case ;)
