My teacher is teaching me Java which I already know so I have been correcting everything he says. After correcting him that java.awt.*; is a package and not a class, I got pissed off about this: "Hyper-Text Markup Language (HTML) is a programming language used to display the headings, titles, and other formatting things for the purpose of the web. It is a machine independent and all Web browsers accept HTML code. Each HTML page has a header and body that is in that code." Why the hell would he think HTML is a programming language!? Every programmer should know that it's a markup language and not a programming language. HTML can only display things! It cannot compute stuff like 8 * 9... Have you had to correct any of your teachers?

I take opposition with all inclusive statement that this applies to all teachers.

In all fairness trying to explain that a package contains classes and calling it a class isn't quite crucifying material.. nor avoiding the nuanced discussion on what constitutes a programming language or not when there's syntax and for loops to learn.

This is a really spectacular way to make yourself popular and learn a lot in the process. Other fun tricks you might try include yawning loudly and intrusively every time he begins to try to say anything, pretending to fall asleep from time to time, and making fun of his bald spot. He'll be so happy that you already know everything there is to know, he's sure to give you a gold star.

For extra bonus points, you can order a pepperoni pizza to be delivered to you... in class. He'll be tickled by this reference to one of his favorite movies!

Seriously - if you know that much, give the guy a hand. Offer to help TA the class or help some of the other kids or something, in exchange for some help with the stuff that you don't know yet. Or if you can't make yourself useful, at least sit down and shut up and don't make an ass of yourself.

I've met some teachers that don't know what the hell they're talking about but they're few and far between and I've been lucky enough to only have 1 of them as my actual teacher but I didn't know any better than him. As modi said, this isn't really examples of a teacher that made any big mistakes. big mistakes are things like telling you kids to use Turbo C++.

It was funny the black and white nature of what is and what isn't a language shifted after my language theory class. It always seems the debate circles around it, and so eloquently put, "It cannot compute stuff". Is there certain point where the bells and whistles reach maximum load and, essentially, the grains of sand become a pile?

Honestly I am not sure.. I never have seen him up close.. maybe a few glimpets of him bounding away after yelling Bill Gate's famous quote "It's a TRAP!"... but that's about it.

I signed up for a computer information systems elective for my junior year of high school, and on the first day the teacher told us flat out that we would focus primarily on the ever esoteric Microsoft Word for the majority of the year. I was a little disappointed, but what could I expect from a public school?

Anyway, there's a kid in there that acts kind of like you, always correcting the teacher. Let's call him Josh. Josh is super pretentious - he knows his stuff about Microsoft Office, but that's about the extent of his IT knowledge, and he walks around like he's Bill Gates. I, on the other hand, keep a low and modest profile in that class, despite the fact that, compared to everyone else in this class, I'm a freaking wizard on the computer (trust me - that's not saying much).

Don't be like Josh. For all you know, there could be a super modest kid in your class that really knows his shit. By correcting your teacher for little things, you're probably just giving the undercover hacker a good laugh. And even if you are at the top of your class, people are probably still laughing at you behind your back.
