I highly recommend starting completely over with new shit at least once in your (young) adult life. Move across the country in a car, taking only what fits in the car.

Another friend of mine had an odd habit. Every year, he'd have a garage sale. The way he'd decide what he was selling was he'd move everything out of his house that could physically be moved without unfastening something - yes, the sinks stayed - and then he'd drink a glass of water and start moving stuff back inside.
Everything he didn't feel like moving back inside, he'd sell or give away.

He had a lot of shit, mind you, and he had shit that he'd been moving in and out of that house for fifteen years, but everything he had was something he'd decided to keep. I still think he's a pretty smart fucker.

Every time we move, I ditch 50% of everything we have... kitchen supplies, furniture, clothing... 50% of it gets thrown away, donated to goodwill/salvo, or sold at a yard sale. Every time (and we move, on average, every 2 years). It's amazing how much shit we can amass in 2 years. Our next move is coming up this summer. I can't wait to unload half of this crap!

And I'm going to guess your friend is a gigolo who specializes in pain fetishes.
