How do designers create sprites and sprite sheets?
What program do they use?
Do they design and draw frame by frame?
How are sprites/spritesheets made

Yes you generally draw frame by frame...
You use a lot of Graph Paper first though.. in designing
You dont generally just draw randomly without a plan
Snoopy.

You can use tools to make the task easier, like in this tutorial.
Daz is a horrific program, but makes making spritesheets almost trivial when combined with a layout app.

search google for "pixel art". MS paint is one of the greatest tools for this job

Yea, MS Paint is awesome at creating pixel art, including sprites because it doesn't have any blending that you'll find with higher end programs like Photoshop. I've created quite a few sprites, including full walk animations for a few characters in MS Paint and I'll never use anything else for pixel art as it suits every need that I've had thus far.

well, making sprites is as simple as using any graphics software (paint is an easy one) to make the images of what you plan to use in your game. be sure to plan out what they want to look like before you do so, however, and try to keep a concise and co-ordinated apperence.
here's a pretty good tutorial on pixel art: http://petesqbsite.c...umo/default.htm
A sprite sheet is simply those sprites you have made on a single image file so you don't need to have as many seperate files, or to use several files at once during the program.
hope that helps

Texture Packer is a decent program that helps you pack images into an atlas: http://www.codeandwe...m/texturepacker
It also works pretty well with http://cocos2d-x.org

I'll tell you what is an amazing sprite sheet creator now, flash CS6. It has built in sprite sheet export tools and onion skinning so creating smooth animation is a breeze. It really is awesome. But expensive

Go with Paint.net. It is free and has many more functions than ms.paint.
