Creating a relation search for distance from zipcode

Hey guys!!

So, I'm toying with the idea of adding a search filter to my site where you can search for businesses locally. To do this I would want to be able to enter a zip code and figure out a distance from said zip. I know there are a million websites that do this and I'm guessing that the smarted devs out there don't create this from scratch so I'm wondering if anyone knows of a place where I can find / buy this type of data?

I've never written anything like this myself, but I'm guessing in order to do a radius search, you'd likely need latitude and longitudes of each zip code. Free database containing the information you are seeking...
