Asus Laptop Randomly Freezing

Posted 31 May 2012 - 08:38 AM

Hey everyone, my friend told me to come here to ask about this question because tech professionals at bestbuy, etc.. Are just flat out idiotic.

When ever I'm on my laptop, it will sometimes just completely lock up/ freeze.
The vent is blowing hot air out, so it could be an overheating problem. Not completely sure.
But I'm not very certain when it comes to hardware.
If someone could try to diagnose it for me that would help a ton. Please and thanks.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

What's the model number and OS on it?

What does the event logs say?

start -> settings -> control panel -> administrative tools -> event viewer

Heat. There are a few good (and free) utilities to monitor the CPU heat. Get one. http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

You spent a grand or more on a quality laptop: Go to OfficeMax and spend $20 on a USB laptop chiller (platform with cooling fans)

In the mean time, go into the power settings and make a setting with the CPU's throttled to half and the fans on to full. Use this setting for every day tasks: You don't need 2.2Ghz while the laptop is waiting for you to type email. Then switch to full speed settings when you are doing something that needs it, like compiling code or rendering 3D models.

What's the error message? Take a screen shot.

If it's overheating then the recommend solution seems to be to open it up and blow all the dust out.

Who knows what could go wrong

As long as you don't let loose the minor demons that provide the computational mana, nothing's likely to go wrong. Just be sure to set the laptop in a pentagram before you start, to keep them confined. Just in case.

Okay.. then you are at an impasse. If you want the cheap solution that would be to open up the case, blow out all the dust in your ports, and try it again.

If you are not comfortable with that then you have a few options..

1. Go talk to those "flat out idiotic" "tech professionals at bestbuy" and let them do it. (Sure it's fun and games to rip on those corporate shills but only if you are able to do what they but better!)
2. Find a local computer repair shop and pay them to do the same thing.
3. Do what Jon was recommending - nut up and try it out yourself. This would probably just be a deduction of your time and the cost of a can of compressed air.

As for #3 - shockingly Asus's website has the user manual and that sort of shows you the screws to remove to get around to parts. Oh and site note, this is pretty damn important, don't lose the f'n screws.

So i took my laptop apart to do what you suggested. And surprisingly there wasnt even any dust in it.
So I looked for a further problem but couldnt find one. I did notice that when I turned my laptop on, the fan doesnt kick in right away(Not sure if thats supposed to happen). And when it does kick in, its a very *lightweight* fan I guess you could say. It isnt very powerful.

From what I understand, laptop fans don't run all the time and or don't run at full speed at all times. Why? You are using a battery and the manufacture does everything it can to extend the battery life. If the fan ran at full speed all the time, you would need to charge the battery more. ASUS is a great manufacture. Problem could be with a faulty part or more likely, faulty ram. There are RAM testers out there, download one and run it and see what it says.

Would you be able to link me to a good ram tester.
