What does an old guy do now to get a job

Posted 02 June 2012 - 10:25 PM

I have been terminated after 25 years of service.
An employee bought-out the company.
I had a big office with 20 file cabinets, plotter and 36 inch wide, blue print machine and all was well until... Company was bought out.
.
.
New laptop, software, CAD, environment. I got a 3x3 corner next to the shitter in a trailer.
I lasted 3 and one-half weeks and then I went a mild postal. (I make a lot of noise but I don't break things).
It is my fault, I know.

My art is a straight line or else !
My appreciation of art depends on $$$
I've pushed and popped in assembly, called BiOS interrupts to scroll in programs, Peek/Poked the screen at BH800 (CGA), and have made many types of programs.

My heart lies in programming.
Do you check for the return code on closing a file?

Should I try to enter the CAD field now or embrace my poetic side?

OK, I am angry, or not so much really since it is time for me to roll over and die.

I would suggest you embrace your poetic side... maybe a little bit of theater because it sounds like you are pretty dramatic.

You need to put together a portfolio and start applying to jobs in programming. When you get an interview, show off your work like you were a pimp selling one of his girls.

You have the years, now show that you have the skills in what is relevant today. Your biggest hurdle will be your relevance.

:)

"this one can shoot ping pong balls out of her!"
"sir...what does that have to do with CAD software?"

On a more serious note I don't have any experience with this stuff. I would say just do what you love and if that's programing, do it.

@ishkabible: CAD/drafting was my job for 25+7 years.
And...What the heck: ping pong balls?
I am good at a lot of things but master of none. The modern programming scene is *way* different now.
@Martyr2: I did produce a book of poetry (hence my DIC name) and have used a few poems in some threads here.
So I took a distribution from my 401K during transfer to IRA with a 20% tax and 10% penalty hit so I can survive until I can tap the IRA. Still ~3 years til SS.

On a different note...
A big shoulder chug to supersloth for always saying it like it is
(Oh, by the way * you too) On the 'Be kind to sloth week, NOT' thread
B9's support for every thread ever started (wink)
Neotifa for putting a sexual spin on anything
(streaks naked and throws graffiti)
Martyr2 for his insight and perception
(If it is true, it may hurt)
and the many regulars that make DIC a fun place online

I think that everybody goes through a difficult time in life. Maybe many times.
Dealing with the red tape as enumerated above (post #1) with no remuneration causes stress.
I am drifting with no goal. My passions: music and poetry, are not matured enough to be sold.

Thanks, guys and gals, I just needed to rant and I find refuge with, with, members on DIC.

Everyone has kind of said what you need to do, Hammer home to potential employers that your skill set/ability is still relevant in today's IT market. After 32 years in the industry I am sure that if you go back a bit, you will find you have a rather extensive portfolio with which you can present to future employers. Anyways, Good luck and I hope you find a job soon :)

How big a company is this and exactly what type of programming did you do for them? Could you produce a competing product? Maybe a mobile version? I guess I like the poetic justice of sticking it to a company that has no loyalty.

I did heavy machinery design. Bearings, hydraulics, load calculations, machine foundations and I had some very nice LISP routines that really accelerated my productivity. LISP is reverse polish notation. I feel like giving up the ghost and retiring at 59 1/2 in six months.Somebody give me a death shot.

I have always been known for being supportive and uplifting, like a good bra. :innocent:

On topic, however, what have you done thus far (if anything) to aid you in your quest for renewed gainful employment?

Any news? I think perhaps try to compile an online portfolio or a website like the such that you can quickly show to your employers during an interview? It's all good to say that you have done X and Y but if you can show them what you deem as your best work, then it might be more impressive?

Just my 2cents.

If all else fails, show a little cleavage. You may not have any, but from what I hear you can convince B9 to show boobies on your behalf...

That much experience-- start your own company or produce your own app/service/consulting..

I doubt you will find many jobs willing to hire someone with that much experience. Sure they exist, but they will be more likely to hire a freshy with low salary expectations. You're better off on your own. :P

That was my first thought: consulting. 32 years experiences = hard to get hired as an employee. However, with that much experience you can realistically claim you've been there and done that and there are firms that pay just to have you come in and nod knowingly at what they're already doing.

Srsly. Look into what database of professional contacts you have and see if you can't be self employed as a consultant. Nice part of that is: if you do manage to get it up and off the ground, you can work pretty much anytime, anywhere, for as long as you like.

Not sure who told you this, pumpkin, but unless they were referring to the kind with blue feet, they were lying. I've yet to find a DIC worthy of the alabaster orbs.
