I am most dubious of those with protracted marketing campaigns.
I go to the movies if I feel the venue will make it more fun. Obviously, a big summer extravaganza kind of thing lends itself to a theater.
For Prometheus I didn't really expect much. Like Cowboys and Aliens, fun if forgettable. It was just so amazingly bad...

i still recommend the movie to people based on how beautiful it was.
True. The visuals were great. I give the visuals 5/5. Unfortunately, I give the script 1/5, and the characters 0/5. This brings it down to an avergae of 2/5, which I think i generous. I have no idea how Roger Ebert gave it 4/4. There's gotta be money changing hands.

On another note, it turns out the same guy that gave us the steaming pile of shit that was LostTM was one of the writers on the screenplay for this: gee, I wonder where they got all the stupid pseudo-religious shit from.
I prefer the term "the steaming pile of shit that was Crossing Jordan".

maybe because ebert is a dude who is allowed to have his own opinions that occasionally diverge from yours.

I still don't understand why the religious aspect of the film is an issue. I didn't feel as if it was preachy, or pushing any agenda. I just thought they explored (in not so much detail) how some would react when many of the primary belief systems on this planet were determined to be false. I think that is a reasonable issue to address, considering the large population of people on this planet that do believe in some sort of deity. I agree with modi though, that the dude with his whining was annoying. Aside from that, I saw nothing wrong with the approach taken.

If anything the religious/lack thereof aspect wasn't addressed enough. Maybe 10 lines in the whole movie dedicated to it. "Oh, you have a cross?" "Yeah..." 30 minutes later... "Where is your god now?!?!" And then off to another tangent.
I would not be surprised if the director's cut made the movie 100% better, a la Kingdom of Heaven.
I would watch a whole movie revolving around Shaw traveling the galaxy with David's head in the bag spouting clever one liners.

You mean, like, One Head in a Bowling Ball Bag? Could you get Joe Pesci to do a cameo?

I also don't get the "omg, there's religious themes, and it's like totally deep" perception. I missed it.
You have the trite idea that some alien race seeded Earth. And? Doesn't explain what supreme being created them and so on and so on. The amount this was covered is rather minimal and hardly worth noting. You get deeper philosophy from you average super hero cartoon.
And a character is fond of their religious medal? That doesn't really imply anything, yet. Perhaps if there had been more story in the story. It would be interesting if a director's cut redeems some of this, but not counting on it.

I like how the robots head got ripped off
and he could still talk perfectly, and his body moved still... I don't really see that happening but I don't know much about mechanics of robots... I did think it was a douche move of him the poison the dude, I didn't like how the bitch burned him after he got sick (sorry I'm naming off random stuff, I don't really pay attention to the names) I would of like to of seen more of the world... they came to that valley a little to fast.... I find it kind of stupid how the robot knows that there are more ships, and that there are more ships.... At the end where the chick almost gets squished by the crashed ship, bull shit. that rock wouldn't of stopped it. and when the other chick got squished... she could of ran 10 feet the other way and been safe... like what the fuzz.... "THERE IS A FALLING SHIP CHASING AFTER US!!! WHAT EVER YOU DO DON'T RUN SIDEWAYS TO AVOID IT!!!!!!!"

The part that bugged me about that wasn't just that they ran the wrong way, but that the ship was somehow magically able to first crash, and then begin rolling, on a facing side of the ship that couldn't have conceivably been designed to support any weight. It shouldn't have rolled; it shouldn't have stayed upright. It should have collapsed in the way only bin laden can make us imagine.

Dude.. I saw a donut do that exact same thing a few days ago. Ted took a bit out of it, inhaled too much powdered sugar, dropped it on its side, and it totally rolled and fell over.. just like in the movie! Though it happened in slow motion Ted still picked it up and ate the rest of it. I vote it was made out of space donuts.
