Explaining Technology to Dinosaurs

Posted 13 June 2012 - 10:36 AM

So, this just happened, and I have to share.

Two weeks ago, my boss asked me how come he cannot open these new .RAR files that the engineers have been sending him. I told him a .RAR file is pretty much a more awesome version of a .ZIP file. I direct him to the website for the downloading of the WinRar program. Things are fine for two weeks.

Fast forward to today and he now has concerns that when he opens a .RAR archive sent to him, if he clicks on the folder with a "..." as the name or the little up arrow, he can see all of his files, and he is concerned that forwarding the .RAR archive to his customer will allow them to see his files if they also click the folder or arrow mentioned.

I spent 15 minutes just now trying to explain that what he is seeing is no different than a browser window (He doesn't want to send a browser window!), or that windows files are structured like a tree, and you can't include higher level folders and files in a lower level file or folder. When asked why we started using WinRAR, I explained that the compression is better. He didn't care and he doesn't like it.

I realized that trying to explain why we use a better program than the one he's used to is a little like trying to explain an Ipod to your grandfather, when he gets irritated that he can't change the station or play a record on it.

Anyone else have an issue trying to explain technology to someone who is older and set in their ways?

Sometimes I try to explain shit to no2pencil and I know it's too much when he starts shaking his cane, mumbling about whippersnappers, and asking me to help find his teeth.

I work in a computer repair store. Always find it kinda funny that when you ask if the computer has a password to bring you to the desktop (old and young btw) ask, whats the desktop or 'I don't know if I do, if I did where would it be'.

Also when you ask someone how they access there email they reply with 'It's just there'

Oh the joys :)

So this just happened to me.

I was reading the forum, and someone I didn't recognize started prancing their tired old horse out into the ring for all of us to see. It was a dull sight to behold, and most everyone ignored it. Being the mocking prick I am, I decided to throw tomatoes at the horse.

Horses like tomatoes.

So I guess I am a "dinosaur". I grew up without:
Internet
Cell phones
cordless phones
more than one TV in the house or a TV with a remote.
all the jerkoffs in the world today
and a few more things the kids/people today have growing up.

Oh, trust me, the jerkoffs existed when you were growing up, they just weren't as readily available due to the lack of technology.

The jerkoffs when I was a kid had Z-28s, popped collars, and a Zack Morris cell phone.

My boss still uses Foxpro 2.6 (you know, the one for DOS). It pains me. He doesn't even understand Visual Foxpro, and even that's dead.

Holy fuck, I just saw my signature. 32 days on Gears 3. :|

My mom just started using facebook and she decided she would upload some pictures to it today. I spent 15 minutes explaining to her why the photos she just uploaded weren't showing up in her news feed, she wanted every image she posted to be on all of her friends news feeds because she saw one image from the album on her news feed about her uploading the photos *facepalm* . At least I only had to tell her twice how add a description to her album (yes, click in the box that says add a description to your album).

lets try and remember when we first started out.

Almost all of us had to learn to walk, and talk and tie shoelaces at some point.

Instead of calling names, and making fun of the technically challenged. Lets take a step back and put ourselves in their shoes for a moment.

Sure it can be a challenge explaining things. But its worth it I think.

I have no issue with explaining things to people who don't understand. Especially since that is part of my job. I was hired to handle everything relating to computers and technology that no one else knew what to do. What pains me is when I make a recommendation and explain what it does and how it works, and even then my boss doesn't believe me.

Personally, I thought the "Don't listen to Celerian because a software engineer wouldn't know fuck all about computers" train had left the station back when I said, "Hey, that old server you have that houses our live production database that you continuously refuse to give me ample space to create a backup? Yeah, well, one of the drive in the RAID array is bad. Like we need to replace a hard drive now. If we don't and one more goes out, the database is hosed."

Several months later, a second hard drive goes out and I spend 5 days straight trying to recover a corrupted database.
