I don't know where to start...

Posted 14 June 2012 - 03:11 AM

Hello, I'm new to Game Programming and I want to start with Java, and I have some things I would like to do...

but I really don't know where to start... I have read about Game Engines, libraries, etc. but I didn't get anywhere

I wan't to make my first game without someones "already made code", I just want to learn the most I can so in the future I may start using something more than a simple IDE. I know I chose probably the hardest way to learn, but I don't mind if I have to do all the hard work all by my self, from maps, models, sounds, everything. And I really don't care for the time I spend in front of my computer

If anyone could tel-me some really useful links so I can get some starting point it would be great.

And I'm sorry for my horrible English...

Thanks everyone :)

Okay - pick a language: c#, c++, java, etc.
Learn how to use a programming language first.
Then dump on the SDKs and APIs like opengl, XNA, or directx.
Profit.

I personally think then that if you are going to "just use Java Game Programming to learn the basics" then rather pick up the language that you are going to develop in and learn as much as you can about it and then learn the necessary SDK's and API's that you want to use. I tried Java Game Programming and eventually swapped to C++ and DirectX as I found in comparison, there was an incredible amount of material to learn from whilst most of the Java Game libraries are in their infancy or do not have very adequate documentation.

Maybe try pick up C# (it's syntax is similiar to Java) and then when you are ready, pick up XNA.

Just my 2cents.

Good Luck with your Game Programming endeavors :)

I took a class this past semester where we were separated into 4 groups and given final projects. One of the projects (not mine) was to develop a game called Beaver Run that basically worked like frogger (run the beaver across the street and don't get hit by a truck!). The professor gave us each a few tips to start us off and let us run with the rest. They were responsible for the graphics, the level design, the collision detection, UI, etc. The game and my project both turned out really well and I learned a lot just by being forced into it!

So my recommendation to you...create a project goal, set a deadline that you would like to have it completed by, and get learning! Read about everything you need to get your goal done...take it step by step and learn!

If you want me to find out what resources they used I can look it up, just let me know.
