I recommend you to start with SQL, Java, Java Script, PHP and HTML. You can learn them here: W3Schools.

tbh, for many w3schools isn't the best method for learning web developement. Personally I started with the Html + css in 30 days course @ http://tutsplus.com from there i moved on too their other courses, i have too say, they do a great job at breaking everything down + their site is very neat and comprehensible.

I started web design two years ago using w3schools. And like .Pollux said, it isn't the best method. I wouldn't suggest it to anyone. I'm not going to explain all the reasons I don't like w3schools, but the guys over at W3Fools have done a great job of explaining them. Now, when you say web development, do you mean the web design aspect, or development side of things? If you're going to get into web design, then I would suggest HTML and CSS.

Now, the source of information that you'll have an easier time using will depend on your learning style. If you're an auditory learner, then I'd suggest looking up tutorials on YouTube, that'll give you the auditory, visual, and tactile styles of learning. If you're good at just reading and following along, then written tutorials or books may be useful to you. We have some wonderful HTML & CSS tutorials available right here on DIC.

If you want to learn development side of things, then there are many options available. You could use languages such as Python, Ruby, PHP, and many others. There is also Javascript, which is different than the others I mentioned because it runs in the browser, and there are many other differences too. You can learn these the same way as learning HTML and CSS, you could read books, watch videos, or read tutorials. And just like for HTML and CSS, we have amazing tutorials on these subjects as well. Here's Python, Ruby, and PHP. You can learn Javascript through the same link as the HTML one.

Good luck :)

For someone with zero experience in web development, I absolutely agree with Gen_R_18 - start with HTML and CSS. You don't have to have a database and a server-side language to build a website. You DO need some level of HTML and CSS skill.

I work professionally as a web developer and have done so for quite a few years now. In addition, I am self-taught. W3Schools will absolutely be enough to get a solid foundation of HTML and CSS. You may also want to use the "View Source" option on your right-click menus (I can't begin to tell you how many tricks I learned this way!). But above all, remember DIC is here to help you all along the way.

Out of sheer curiosity, what was your major in school?

Use HTML. HTML is a pretty basic web programming language.

Correction: HTML is a markup language. NOT a programming language.

Why does everyone have to Nazi about HTML being a markup language vs. programming language?

It all depends on your definition -

Quote

A programming language is an artificial language designed to communicate instructions to a machine, particularly a computer.

As you can see, you could easily fit HTML under this. You are not exactly going to fail immediately if you call HTML a programming language instead of a markup language. There are much better things to waste your brain power on.

Of course if you use that loose definition, then you would be correct. However we know HTML is not "Turning Complete".

At best you could say that html is a type-3 grammar on the Chomsky Hierarchy .

p.s. html+CSS is Turing complete!

My point still stands. Unless you are writing a paper about it or something, nobody cares.
