.exe file of program

Posted 19 June 2012 - 01:48 AM

I have completed my program and would like to send that program in its compiled state to other pc's.

I understand that in the Debug folder there is the programName.exe file, which when I open it on the PC I created it with - it opens.

But if I send that .exe file to other pc's, it crashes or simply doesnt run!

Is there a way for others to see and use my program without having to install visual studio etc etc?

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

They will need to have the .NET runtime installed. You can get it here

Hi Cammy,

The executable file requires some of the other files that you would find in your Debug/Release folder in order to work correctly, such as the yourproject.exe.config file.

So if you copy the entire folder, the program will likely work.

However to deploy an application is to create an installer for it, this makes it easier for the user as they only have one file to deal with and you can ensure all the files are organised and go to the correct folders.

You can also bundle distributable such as the .NET framework into installers so that the user has everything they need.

Windows Installer is Microsoft's free installer, although there are many others about such a InstallShield and WiX.

Hi Negligible,

Thanks for the info, I have now sent the entire debug folder to a friend to see if it works, if not then I will look into using an installer as you said, however, I am not sure how to do this.

When you said:

is this how I would go about doing that? By downloading, installing and mounting everything onto a Windows installer?

Thanks

I have gone through the process of creating a setup as you have shown in that tutorial, and when I come to installing the program, it installs fine; in the Uninstall a program section I can see the program has been installed.

But I cannot find any files or traces of the actual program on my computer. Where is it, why has it not created a file to the users desktop as I have explicitly asked it to and have rebuilt the setup file.
