You can put Linux on anything, is it a gentle, easy process for the average computer set-upper?

I was always under the impression this is not how linux (as a whole) wants to be portrayed. If normies started wandering around and becoming familiar with linux (of any flavor) then.. dear lord.. exclusivity is ruined!

You have heard of ubuntu, haven't you?

is it EVER "a gentle, easy process for the average computer set-upper" until smart guys come around and do difficult things and then make those difficult things easier and easier release by "for the average computer set-upper"???

I'd love to see a link, because I just don't believe you. At all. Because here's all their ultrabooks:

http://www.tigerdire...ers-_-Spot%2022

and none of them are $400. And the ones that are close aren't i5s with 64 gig SSDs.

Is this Linuxes fault, or the devices fault? And if it's the devices fault, what evidence do you have to support it being difficult on this device... since the evidence I've seen so far (mainly it being an intel based x86 platform), it shouldn't be hard at all.

Also an ultrabook for 400 with the same specs? What used? Refurbished? Not in the states or Europe?

Hearsay, you didn't offer up a link.

Here, I'll go to tigerdirect right now and put in the specs this thing has and lets see the AVERAGE results.

ok, went to tiger-direct, selected section ultrabooks. It had two break downs... 500-999, or 1000->up. NOTHING in a lower price category. So I selected 500->999 just to see if we got something in the 501 area. Listed from price low to high... and we get the cheapest ultrabook at 550 dollars with a 1st gen i5 (not 3rd gen like the surface) with no SSD.

hrmmm... yeah, love those matching specs.

http://www.tigerdire...:999.99|&Sort=4

So lets try this again. Lets not select the ultrabook section which obviously doesn't hit the price point. And just go with regular laptops.

(holy god their website is slow, and their narrowing categories suck... newegg does so much better)

OK, working with their narrowing here is a list of i5, 4GB of RAM, NEW only.

http://www.tigerdire...099_32554_32554

The first one, due to being on sale temporarily is under 500. It's at 470, and is actually a 3rd gen i5. It still lacks SSD, and the next ones up jump over 500 immediately.

So back to my ORIGINAL statement. On average ultrabooks are in the 700 - 1000 range (as the link to ultrabooks proved). And to get down to your price level we had to strip the ultrabook label, and start digging in the bargain bin with lower hardware specs and standards. And still it was over your 400 dollar price statement.

Of course I could find cheaper by allowing for refurbished. And we get...

http://www.tigerdire...479_53451_53451

And look at that. The mythic 400 dollar laptop.

http://www.tigerdire...404114&CatId=17

Oh yeah, it's a refurb... like I suspected in my original post.

You're saying this as like it's something I didn't know already here on a forum where we post opinions about technology and stuff.

I was making the statement to contrast that the 3rd part of my 3 part break down was IN AGREEMENT with your opinion. To contrast against your faulty facts that were the other 2 parts.

Tiger Direct isn't exactly an organized website, but 400ish was the sale price and it was normally 500ish.

You don't have to believe me;

- A new ultrabook arrived in the mail one day after I figured out how to get their shopping cart tool to work properly.
- I learn there is a Microsoft Surface Pro that was marketed for people like me who require a standard OS environment (see much older post of mine in this thread).
- A tablet computer is "neat" and "flashy".
- My only factors in purchasing a machine consider long-term everyday use on the go for a portable computer.
- I work the fastest on a solid keyboard with built-in infrapad south of keyboard (true for both portable computers and desktops).
- The Microsoft Surface Pro is strong enough.
- The ultrabook was strong enough.
-> Therefore I choose to remain with the ultrabook.

It's bizarre how you're trying to argue with myself inside my own mind for myself on things I prefer. Whatever you call this wall of text, you should save yourself the effort and omit it the next time you want to argue with yourself as me inside your own mind to my mind.

I'm not trying to argue your opinion. I already said I agree with your opinion part. That opinion being you don't like touch screens and the sort. That's your opinion, you have the right to it, and I agree with it. Your other opinion is that you don't want the surface, which is cool as well, don't get it then.

The things I called bullshit on, and everyone else called bullshit on, is your claims of ultrabooks costing 400 dollars, and the inability to install linux on the surface.

Both of which aren't opinions. They're statements that you think are facts.

They aren't facts though, as they are demonstrably false.

Yes you may have found a freak ultrabook on sale for 400ish, a ultrabook we don't know exists, and falls hundreds of dollars below the price of other ultrabooks. But that doesn't mean ultrabooks on average should or would cost that price.

The fact tiger-direct isn't an organized site doesn't help you either. It highlights your lack of evidence for your claims.

I'm not writing a thesis here, this is a place where I post idle chatter. I have no idea why you've got your panties in a bunch, and now I give up trying to understand- not like I really put much effort into it anyway.

It's actually a nearly grammatically correct post, you're just confusing convolution with syntax.

Lol, my panties are in a bunch.

I hate when that happens.

I guess that's what happens for wearing lady pants. But I look so beautiful in them... I just can't quit.

If you're going to make false claims, and not supply evidence, because it's not a 'thesis'. Don't be surprised when people say bullshit due to your lack of evidence. You can be lazy, but I can call you lazy for being so.

Did you really just link to "What is a Preposition"? Please tell me that was a mistake, and that you're not trying to use that to justify those sentences. And you can't justify grammar out of context. Sure, your prepositional phrases may be compositionally correct, but ambiguity of modifiers is bad grammar too. And some of your pronouns are wrong. So I stand behind my original statement.
