Time to write about myself...

Posted 22 June 2012 - 03:11 PM

Hey everyone!

Here are some basics:
Name: Eugene
Age: 18
Education: Just graduated high school! Attending Mizzou in the fall.

So, basically, I have always wanted to learn how to program, but I have never taken the time to do so. Plus, I'm going to be studying Computer Science, mainly because I enjoy math, so hopefully learning some of this stuff will help me determine the extent of my interest in the field. I'm beginning with Python simply because I have read a tremendous amount about how it is very readable and accessible for a novice coder. (If you have any thoughts in regards to a first language, do tell!) I can make some basic programs so far, but nothing spectacular. I think my most recent thing was for a problem on Project Euler (lol) that asked for a program the could find the largest prime factor of 600851475143.

In terms of intellect, I would say that I am fairly smart, though nothing exceptional, and in general I'm a curious person (Which reminds me...Do you have to be a mega-genius to be a stupendous programmer? Brains probably play a little into it, but surely some good ol' practice impacts one's overall abilities too? Silly question, I know).

Hmm..that's all I can think of. A big reason for me joining this forum was to find a community of people whose interests roughly coincide with mine.

So..tell me about yourselves! :D

Welcome to the site. :D As I read the first part of your post about you liking math, I was actually thought to suggest Project Euler as something to try at some point. Glad you've already found it to work on.

I've seen people say Python is a good starting choice as well, but I really don't know, as I've never used it. When I started I just jumped straight into assembly. I always tend to start things off from the bottom up. Right now I'm currently working with C#, and playing around with XNA (trying to, mostly) make small games. Then play other games when I need a break from that, lol. Also.. scI-fI, anime, and reading a lot of chemistry related things.

As to the question at the end.. seeing as some people can be a genius book/math/science/whatever wise, but have no common sense, and the other way around... The best answer I can give to that you need to have good problem solving skills, be good at researching and finding what you need to get something done, and be able to see and keep track of how everything your doing effects the whole program well once you get to bigger projects. It's also good to be able too look at things from all/different angles and not get too caught up in doing something one way or the other. Oh, and a lot pf patience. ;)

So whats are some of your other interests, aside from programming?

Is there a way to edit my post? I forgot the second part.

I started with PHP, mainly because my friend taught me a thing or two when messing around with computers. I would suggest starting with whatever sounds/ looks fun to you. If you want to learn more about how computers/programming work on the ground floor, maybe start with something like C or C++. If you want to just pump out cool little programs faster when you first start, try something like Python or maybe PHP.

Haha, yea. The new was they spell it is just stupid. Then again with the way their show selection is going, moving more the mainstream, and away from true good sci-fi, I guess it fits. And I think you loose the option to edit after so much time has passed. I'm also not sure in new members can edit at all until they reach a certain post count. Should say in the rules/facts if you really want to know.
