Where would you go for a gap year?

Posted 28 June 2012 - 01:06 PM

Hey everybody,

I'm in my mid 20's and I'm considering a gap year. I have an undergrad degree and I've taken 1 semester's worth of classes for my master's degree. I want to transfer schools but it's entirely too late in the year to do that for the upcoming fall semester at the schools I'm looking at. So, I guess I'm taking the fall off. Then it occurred to me that I could also take the spring off and start school next fall. I have an entire year to play with! I don't have anything holding me to the place I'm in now, and I can rent out my house for the year (I might even make a couple bucks in the process).

So what should I do? Teaching English in a foreign country immediately comes to mind. I've heard it's a fantastic experience, I might be able to backpack while I'm out there, and most programs provide you with a place to live and pay you a livable salary. I've heard it's really fun to do this in South Korea. I considered the JET program, but I wouldn't be able to get anything off the ground until April, so that's no good. I would love to find a program where I could teach Computer Science abroad, but I don't know of any such thing. I'm familiar with wwoofing, but I need at least a little money coming in, even if it's only a tiny bit. I also considered the Peace Corps, but a 2 year commitment at this stage in my life seems tough.

What do you guys think? What would you guys do if you were in this situation? Are there any other incredibly awesome ideas that I'm completely overlooking?

WTF is a "gap year"? Back in my day a "gap year" was just the cover to tell grandma for being a listless slack ass who isn't going to back to The Establishment's Training Centers and really just a way to ease everyone into you not making something of yourself. At least that's how I remember it.

To the cabin where I'm keeping Kate Upton, obviously.

Seriously though, the Peace Corps sounds like a great idea.

It's not that I can't decide, truthfully, I've already come to a decision. I was curious about other people's thoughts. I was most curious whether there was something out there that I wasn't even aware of, who knows?

Meh, as much as I want to escape for a while, it makes a lot more sense to finish my graduate degree first. After that, I can take a year or two off before I get my PhD. There's something completely unsatisfying about waiting, but my situation won't change drastically between now and then. Besides, it'll be a lot easier to explain why I took a year off after finishing my degree rather than during it.
