Wow..

Posted 01 July 2012 - 10:09 PM

Okay guys, this kind of really made me wonder what is wrong with people these days... today, it was Canada day, and my friend from there posted this status on her social media network of choice:

Quote

So , since its canada day , i convinced the baker at work to put red white and blue sprinkles onto the donuts ( American colors ) instead of just red and white :') !!!

It is now the the point of close to 200 comments on it.. here are some of the comments:

Quote

you should be forced to leave canada. Be proud of your country, not disgrace it.

im not gonna be angry or insult or anything i just think that this is a redundant status that has a negative effect on your country. if you like the states so much why aren't you there? Canada is a FREE country it may be a little thing to complain about. but think about what it represents. its taking something exclusive to one country and spreading it around the world like a disease. there is a REASON why only certain countries have their individual day. to SEPERATE from other countries. can you wait 3 more days to celebrate?!

I might accidentally tell your manager you really offended me.go back to the states

Leave canada

A couple of our friends and I started just trolling them and arguing back and eventually the americans one :3 but anyway... really what in the world? It was a joke.

Why are people so serious about a joke, and why so mean to people like that... I don't know what I'm really trying to say besides what in the world is wrong with people these days, telling people to get out of the country because of a blue sprinkle...

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 2

Clearly this person's responders were able to extrapolate the flaunted lack of patriotism in the post and decided to offer solutions.

Sort of on topic, but I find that people commonly resort to the response "if you don't like it, leave" when someone doesn't agree with how the country is being ran. Never made any sense to me.

Too late it was taken wrong.

Sure your average teen may just be spouting jingoistic rhetoric, but I would imagine there are a fist full that are honestly just patriotic. I know it pisses me off when I see people sporting US flag boxers or dragging along the flag. You know - basic shit that the US flag code outlines is a no-no.. but what am I going to do? Take my thirteen year old fists of fury and beat them? Naw..

Benzoate, simple solution. She should take her shirt off & provide photos. That's the only way to settle this pesky Canada, USA thing.

He was saying your forum sig isn't in /dic colours, therefore you should leave. Then he commented that it sounded stupid here as well as on your friend's facebook.

There are others here who are actually, you know, Canadians...but I did live there for a time (an American, from the south, in Canada) and to say that most Canadians are somewhat touchy about being associated with America would be, in most cases, an understatement.

There was a poll done years back where someone asked the average Canuck on the street "what nationality are you". Seems like a simple question but only like 15% of the respondents said "Canadian". Even if they were born and raised there, most said something like "English" or "French" or "Indian" or "Native" or wherever else their family heritage originated. Thing is, amongst themselves they don't all seem to be "Canadians" but when presented with an external identity they do come together as Canadians. It's hard to describe so maybe I'm not doing the concept justice. However, there is one thing all Canadians, no matter what ethnic heritage, can agree on nearly 100%:

They don't like to be confused with Americans.

They watch our TV, listen to our music, read our books and newspapers and even watch our news...but suggest they possess anything more than a passing resemblance to Americans and you'll see the normally placid and docile Canadian express something like irritation and possibly lukewarm aggression at the suggestion. Having some troll, even for a joke, suggest a red, white...AND BLUE color scheme on Canada Day will incite many locals to drop their Ex's and Timbits and express a "piss off, eh"...at least for a moment.

Which, to my mind, makes them very like Americans. Interesting.

People choose the groups that provide them identity and if you threaten an individual's identity, they tend to take it very badly. Most Americans, when asked where they're from, will give a family heritage. If the context is American or not American, we'll then call ourselves American. There are parts of the US where people will call themselves American first, but no here in Jersey.

Anyway, most Americans wouldn't like to be thought Canadian, so it's understandable if the reverse be true. However, we're such self absorbed, arrogant, bastards that we assume "America" means only "The United State of America" because, honestly, that's the only part that counts. Can't imagine why our neighbors get miffed by that...
