Hey,
I am planing on creating a small file sharing website like mediafire and i would like to know what hosting service is good for a website like this. I am planing to start on a free hosting service and then switching to an unlimited paid service later.
For now what is the best hosting service that will provide me with a lot of disk space and bandwidth etc?

Ah.. go compare people? There are hundreds of thousands of free hosting joints.. though not many give up the high numbers in the space and bandwidth... you know, because they are free.

Not sure why you want to start a project (for profit) about a business you don't know how it works, & clearly has established leaders already offering that service.

I guess its all about the challenge and i am not doing this for profit, it is just a service to people to get free storage online with no restrictions and as you said there will be many problems with the initial release but doesn't greatness come with failure? (i think ive heard that somewhere or is it just me? o.O )

Well for one it's completely free to use and any user can get unlimited storage without paying anything. The servers will run off donations from users (if they want to donate) worse case scenario i will make my parents pay for the server (not in a forceful way or anything haha )
And i know the importance of OPEN SOURCE and a free internet without restrictions.
If the project is a success, AND THATS A BIG "IF" then everyone can get together and develop upon it and give all these huge companies a run for their money
Well that's the vision of a teenager, who knows, this might be a complete flop!
But i will give it my best and i WILL try!

Personally, whether a flop or not, I wouldn't even mess with 'free' hosting. Go straight to a paid service with excellent customer service. I recommend Just Host.

Not sure that this is an open source project. Uploading files, user logins... I really don't see how you are creating anything new? The only one that gets anything from this, are going to be leech users, & the company you are paying for hosting.

Realistically, what you are setting up here, is you will pay to have hosting, which you will allow strangers to use for free.

& in your initial post you said it would be free now, & unlimited with pay later. Now you describe it as free & open source.

No what i meant was to start hosting on a free hosting service and then upgrade to an unlimited paid hosting service so that everyone can have free unlimited storage.
And yes even i know that what im doing sounds crazy and stupid but who knows this might be a revolution in online storage. An internet where everyone can share what ever they like when ever they like without having to pay for anything. And come to think of it isn't sharing the basis of knowledge and hence shouldn't people be allowed to share extensively with no restriction to improve upon one another's intellect.
Ok im sounding like an old man now so im going to stop.
Who knows maybe this project will reach to heights that i now imagine impossible.
The next time a major file sharing provider comes into play it might just be me (or not hehe)
Watch out for this because i already have most of the code in place.

Here is how this will go down :

You'll not read the TOS with whatever hosting service you use.
A leecher will upload illegal cracks, warez, pornography, or mp3s violating that TOS.
You will have to handle any reprimand from authorities or said hosting service.
You'll realize that those who take, take A LOT (thus why they are called leechers), & that no one will use your service for any practical reasons.

It's great that you are thinking about for us by us services, but P2P changed all of that imo.

You are going to be taken advantage of because it's something that you don't understand, or don't respect the dangers. Anyone reputable is already using a reputable service like drop box. I'm sorry, but I just don't see a need for what you are suggesting to setup, I don't think you fully understand how it will be misused, & I think the risk to reward factor is way on the wrong side of the scale.

You do know that there is no such thing as "Unlimited" storage/bandwidth right? Your most likely going to go with a "shared" hosting service or VPS, and even though they say unlimited it is not.
Your other options to look into are:
1. VDS a bit more than the shared/VPS hosting but usually more options and freedom
2. Dedicated server - this costs the most money but offers the best options.
