I came across this awesome article on Twitter the other day, and I must admit that the majority of what is listed in this article makes perfect sense to me. Larger budgets are killing the games industry by requiring impossible numbers of units sold in order to recoup development costs. It's definitely worth a read, when you get some time. It's a bit long, but there is a lot of great information and it shows that the author did their research on this one.

I think that the major development studios need to realize that they must move away from big budget shooters that don't innovate at all. It's sad to say it but I think that most of the more exciting and innovative work is coming from indie developers, teams of 1-3 as opposed to teams of 500. Just goes to show bigger doesn't always mean better.

I couldn't agree more. The AAA market is in a lot of trouble, and the indie market is beginning the thrive mainly for that same reason.
