What is the Diffeence between Visual Basic and Visual Studio

Posted 06 July 2012 - 01:46 PM

I've done some searching on it already, but I dont really quite understand. I know Visual Studio is more of an environment and Visual Basic houses languages such as Visual C++ and Visual J++. But its all kind of fuzzy. I've been looking around and I have not found a site that really goes in depth on the differences. So if someone could link me to a site or book that explains it properly could you help me out.

Also which one is better for Game development? Or does it not matter.

Thanks!

Yes - Visual Studios is an 'IDE' or 'integrated development environment'. Just like Eclipse is (often for Java and PHP), or Netbeans. It houses the compiler, solution structures, and so forth.

Visual Basic is actually a language - not a cover for languages. There's old VB (usually VB6) and then there's new VB (VB.NET). What you are confusing there is the .NET part. .NET is a group of similar libraries, common functionality, and runtime framework that is ported to various languages - VB.NEt, C#, F#, etc.

Visual Basic, Visual C# etc etc are all individual languages that base themselves around the .Net framework library.

Visual Studio is nothing but the IDE that allow you to develop in these languages.

So Visual Basic does not house Visual C++ at all, they are completely different languages, but just share the .Net framework.

So which one is best for Game Development Visual Studio or Visual Basic? Well Visual Basic as Visual Studio is not a language. It's just a tool that allow you to develop in those languages.

Hope that clears it up.

So just to make sure I have it right, Visual Studio is kinda like Eclipse and Visual Basic is like Java?

So if I were to download Visual Basic I get just the Visual Basic language. Whereas if I download Visual Studio I get Visual Basic, Visual C++, and the other languages correct?

Yes.

No.. you really don't "download" VB - you get the .NET framework install pack. That covers your bases for all the .NET languages.

Depending. You can get the 'Express' version of VS for specific languages... or the pro that has the compilers for all of them.

Yes.

If you download MS Visual Basic.Net 2010 Express edition for free from Microsoft's website, you will only get VB (although I think you can also download the other language Express editions and they will all be found within the same VS IDE). If you buy Visual Studio you will get VB, C#, C++, and Visual F#.

Visual Studio is the integrated development environment (IDE) used to create programs in Visual Basic or the other 'Visual' named languages. Visual Studio is like the text editor, Visual Basic is like the language you are writing in.
