Arch Linux Cant find boot device

Posted 07 July 2012 - 05:36 AM

I know there are a million topics about this "30 second error" on other sites but none of those answers have solved my problem. I am trying to install Archlinux over the Fedora install I have on my netbook. I try using a USB to install it but after I select Boot ArchLinux from the graphics menu it would load for a few seconds start looking for the boot device for 30 seconds then say that it cant find it and drops to a shell.

I tried all of the "ln -sf /dev/sd(x) /dev/archiso" and none of that works.
Also the workaround "udevadm" does not work either.

So is there a fix for this?

Thanks in advance,
Dartos

How did you install Arch onto the USB device? Did you install an installation type image or a normal install? When you installed Arch on the USB device where did you install the boot loader? Are you sure your laptop will boot from a USB device? If it will boot from a USB device did you try to actually boot from that USB device through the bios instead of using the boot loader contained on the hard drive?

I installed it with pendrivelinux from the x86_64 image on the archLinux site. I am using the bios to boot it and I already installed Fedora 17 this same way but fedora had no issue finding the boot device. It says on some posts in the arch linux forums that the installer has troubles with USB installs but none of the fixes there worked and because my laptop does not have a disc drive I have no choice but to use a USB.

Have you tried posting this question on the Arch Linux forums? Also did you try the 32 bit operating system to see if that worked properly. I also noticed some upgrades on the Arch WEB site, noticeably the unetbootin packages. But I would really suggest posting on the Arch forums.

I did but their answers didn't solve the problem. It seems like they should work. They were the fixes I listed in the original post.

Did you ensure that your usb stick is the proper size? I know that if you have something more than about 2GB it can't be a bootable usb stick.

That is my best estimate at a problem, but maybe it will be of use. This may also be of use: https://wiki.archlin...ux_on_a_USB_key

I don't think that is true. I installed fedora on my netbook with a 16gb stick. But if that is just a think with archlinux I am using a 4gb stick. Ill see if I can dig up a 2gb stick.
