Is there a solution to alt text problem in Chrome?

Posted 08 July 2012 - 09:27 AM

Hi!

There seems to be a bug in chrome so that alt texts for images donīt display, and i need alt texts for my web project.

How do you solve that problem?

I have seen a javascript solution but couldnīt implement that and get it working. Any solution is welcome. Even though i think that if there is, a PHP solution would be best, cause users canīt turn that off.

Many people get alt texts mixed up with image title, im only asking for a solution to the problem with alt texts. I have to use both, so cant use titles instead.

Regards C.

What is your idea of what the "Alt text" does?

Alt text defines the text to be displayed in place of the image when:
The image is loading
User turned off image loading
User uses a text based browser
User is blind or has bad sight and the alt text is used by the screen reader.

Maybe if you explain in more detail what your project is about, you will get more help/workarounds.

By alt-text do you mean text symbols produces when typing alt and a number code such as ALT+10004 produces a checkmark in Windows

but in certain fonts and character code pages it looks like a paragraph symbol: ķ

UPDATE: I think Gunner is right about your question being less than clear

Making a web page for a company, the page is also a school project. The web page contains images in the HTML document. The company has customers, and possibly, for some of the reasons you wrote, the customers might not be able to see images. For reasons of usability, and course demands, i will need to have alt texts for people that can't, or doesnt want to view images.

All images has width and height set. I have tried to set font and font sizes in both CSS class and in img tag in html document. Some people say that can fix the problem, but didnt for me.

Need more info?

What version of Chrome? Just tried in version 20.0.1132.47 m and it works if the image size is large enough.

Put this in a test file, and tried it and it shows the text fine.
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"
    "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">

<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en" lang="en">

<head>
  <title></title>
</head>

<body>
  <img src="e:\abc.png" width="100" height="150" alt="Test" />
</body>

</html>
c:\abc.png is an invalid file

Thanks for your help. I think i got it working correctly now. Will try to clearify if moore people get the same problem. I used relative paths to my images, like <img src = "image_map/image.png"> , and changed them to absolute paths, like <img src = "http://www.webpage/image_map/image.png">, and now working fine. Donīt even have to change img size.
