XNA Game Programming Challenge 6 (of 11?) - WAR!

POPULAR

It is time for XNA game programming challenge number six (of eleven??). This challenge will be ten weeks in duration.

Challenge:
WAR!

Description:
The gauntlet has been thrown down, the gloves have been taken off, and factions are fighting. What they are fighting for is up to you. Where they are fighting is up to you. It could be a fantasy world, it could be the real world or it could be in space. The important thing here is that there is a war with at least two sides fighting.

Requirements:
The only requirement for this one is that the player gets to play the bad guy. I am not requiring menus or anything else. Having menus, high scores and other elements you find in a game will net you bonus points. I will ask that you use the Reach profile rather than the HiDef profile because I will be judging entries on both of my computers and my laptop does not support HiDef.

Scoring:
I will not take points off of a project for artwork or lack thereof. This is a programming challenge, not an art challenge. I am looking for game play over assets. A game that is fun to play and doesn't have the best art will score higher than a game that doesn't play well and looks good and plays poorly. You have completed the challenge and have a chance to win Gold, Silver or Bronze.

Gather your resources and begin writing your games! You have until September 17th to get your submission in. Anything submitted after September 17th will not be accepted. You do not have to submit your source code, but you can if you wish. All that I require is your output directory.

If you have any difficulties with your entry you are free to ask for help in the XNA forum here at Dream.In.Code. I would also suggest opening a thread in the XNA forum to chronicle your progress on your game, or on your Dream.In.Code blog.

Best of luck in this game programming adventure!

Awesome! It looks like I will have some free time to compete in this one. I can't wait to see what everyone else comes up with.

A few questions - will this need to be playable by two people at the same time, or just that the player is against some AI enemy?

By 'war' I am getting this is a real time strategy-esque game, not something like a FPS - right?

I tried to leave it fairly open to the programmer to decide. You could do a Call of Duty, FPS, type game or a Starcraft/Warcraft type of game, RTS. You could even do something entirely different. As long as the theme of war is in the game. Making it multiplayer would definitely increase your score.

Six, are we allowed to use classes from the internet (for example an A* implementation) or does it have to be our own code? With credit of course.

You're welcome to use code from the web as long as you do give credit to its source.

Hopefully war can be taken in a broader sense.
For instance would you call civilization war? Or populous?

Yes, I would consider those games under the war category.

I've never made a game before, I started learning C# & XNA last year ago and am trying to make a game with my boys (10 & 13). They do the art in paint.net and I'm doing the programming and cobbling it together.

I saw this post while searching XNA game info and thought it would be a great way to force myself to get something "out there" for others to see, regardless of quality, rather than have it sit and never be "done".

A few questions since I'm new:
What resolution is best for you? (Mine's fixed in the code right now)
Will you accept a .zip of the x86/debug folder as an entry?

Thanks

Best resolution to work with is 1280x720 (720p). Yes, I do accept a compresses Debug folder for submission.
