I got two emails over the past week about a domain that I have been wanting. The emails say that the domain's registration is running out soon and that I can make an offer on it.

How can I tell if this is legit and safe to do?

• 1> Both emails refer to the same site for were to go to make an offer, but the email addresses are from completely different domains...
  
• 2> The web sites that the emails refer to are www.****.info/* random chars* which does not sound very safe.
  
• 3> The site that I am watching no longer has the "under construction" site on it that has been there for the past 5 years or so.
  
• 4> Godaddy has an option to "Back Order" the domain name for $20, has anyone done this? How does it work?

I really want your expert advise on this before I do anything.

A quick google search for 'go daddy back order' suggests that back ordering simply means you get first bid on a domain auction.
If you want to know how close the domain is to expiring try using the whois command.
Is the site you want available under a different top-level domain? e.g.: .us

I've been doing some reading and my guess is that the domain I want is going to expires soon and now I'm getting junk/spam emails that are trying to sell it to me.

The domain looks to be abandon so hopefully the owner is not going to renew.

Go Daddy is not the only one that offer a back order service, should I use a back order service? Who's should I use?

Yes, as GWatt said - do a 'whois' lookup and it should tell you.. try a few different sites if it doesn't show up on one.

I personally try to stay with the more legit services.. shady back room deal sites are rife with issues.. like taking your money and not securing the site.
