What text editor(s) do you use?

Posted 10 July 2012 - 06:39 PM

Hey everyone, sorry if this has been created before, but I want to see what text editors (not IDEs) you use. Also, if you care about such trivial things, do you have any favorite fonts for programming?

Personally, my all-time favorite text editor is Notepad++. Aesthetics are really important to me, and Notepad++ delivers in that respect: code actually looks nice because its font is dependent on the language you're using, and the indentation is flawless. I literally freak out when I use a text editor that doesn't auto-indent properly like most IDEs and Notepad++; it's a standard of editor quality that I've grown used to. Notepad++ is very simple and useful, but it has one major drawback: it's built for Windows.

My second favorite editor is Bluefish. Although it's measurably slower than Notepad++ in many ways (load time, code-highlight and parse time, etc), it's almost like an IDE in lots of ways, and it does pretty much everything Notepad++ does. By default, though, even when looking past its relative speed deficiencies, it isn't the near-perfect editor like Notepad++ because it takes some configuration to set a good font (especially in Linux), and the indentation is always screwed up before you manually configure it.

Anyway, let me know what editors you use and why. Thanks!

This has been done to death before, but well, what heck, for 2012.

I like Notepad++. That's it. :)

None. I see no reason to go back to 1980's level software in the 21st century.

So, do you use some sort of programming interface that looks like the minority report computers? Or do you connect electrodes to your forehead and think your program into the computer?

I do the latter, they thought I was a bit weird when I started my new job.

I normally end up using vim or kate/kdevelop.

I'm a fan of notepad++ also. It just has all the stuff I might need to read a code or something fast and easy.

VIM here. Though I have used Notepad, Notepad++, Gedit, and Emacs in the past.

I had a go at emacs last year, but it exacerbated the troubles I've been having with my hands. Too much control-key stuff, hurts the weak fingers.
I've been moving away from underscores in variable names for the same reason.

In the OP, there was a restriction right away not to list IDEs. So I think he was implying that he now uses as IDE full time instead of using a standalone text editor.

Learned vim first, became an emacs guy for a long time, then went back to vim. Now I'm using Sublime Text 2.

Learn vi or vim... unless you are using a Dvorak keyboard. If so, find a different editor because vi will be an exercise in frustration unless you take your fingers off the home position and use real cursor keys. The point of using vi is to key your fingers at the home position, so...

But if you have a dvorak keyboard and use vim it's the perfect time to actually look into how the vim configuration files work so that you can remap the hjkl navigation to the dvorak homerow.
