USB 3.0 and Wireless

Posted 10 July 2012 - 07:36 PM

Hello everyone!

I am having very a very weird problem that I could not find much reference to on the web, and it is driving me crazy. Originally, I thought it was the devices and then I narrowed the issue down to a specific port. Anything that I plug into the USB 3.0 port on my laptop causes random, time-inspecific drops of internet. Not just drops the connection, but it makes wireless itself turn off and on again and so on.

I have a feeling that the USB 3.0 drivers themselves are messing up, but I am not sure what to replace them with or how to do that.

I am running Windows 64 bit on a Dell XPS 14z. If there are any other specs you need to help diagnose the issues, let me know.

Thanks.

First stop would be the event logs and check for any logged errors there.

You can always update drivers in Device Manager. Expand USB Controllers, right click on Root Hubs and/or Host Controller and select update driver software.

See, at this very moment, I do have my USB 3.0 hard drive plugged in using USB 3.0 with no issues. 10 minutes ago, my network was going crazy. Nothing in the logs though that I see as the cause of this failure. Also, the drivers do indicate that they are up-to-date.

Power options maybe? Device Manager > USB Root Hub > Power Management > uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"

Aha! Did not know about that setting. Let's see if that changes things. I will let you know if these problems persist.

Check around the other devices you have, many have this setting.
