I am working on a personal project and am having trouble overcoming a certain problem. Iv therefore made this post to get feedback on a possible solution. I was wondering whether it would be possible to program a facial recognition system to recognize and respond to a subject other than a persons facial features.

So for example: instead of picking out someone's face from a crowd, extracting the face from the rest of the scene, and comparing it to a database of stored faces. The system might pick out a cat or dog that shows up on the camera and then compare it to a database of stored cats and dogs.

So im basically im interested to find how difficult it would be to alter an existing facial recognition system to do something similar to the example above.

Your question made me think of two different projects, one that uses facial recognition to unlock a cat door, the other that leverages a SVM to spray squirrels with a squirt gun protecting the birdfeeder.

Thank you for such a quick and helpful response. They are some really interesting projects and they led me to OpenCV which sounds like exactly the sort of program i need.
