I am/have probably done something very stupid, but please bear with me.
I have bought (a while ago) an external hard drive of 500gb.
it worked perfectly, but now all of a sudden it claims to have only 233gb capacity. I formatted it twice and all, but it still claims to have only 233gb space...
the hard drive I am using is a

I was hoping someone could solve that, or at least tell me what the problem is...

What was its size when it was 'working perfectly'? Also what OS are you using? I have heard of a shrinking anomaly in Vista.

Also check your BIOS hard disk settings and check the mentioned size. If it shows 233gb too, try TestDisk. It's used for Data Recovery.

ah I managed to solve it on my own the problem was that he had somehow allocated half my hard drive. therefore it was solved by creating a second partition from the allocated memory and merge the partitions into one partition which now has it's normal size
I am using windows 7 by the way.
for those who are intrested in the partition manager, it's easeUS partition manager, and should anyone have questions about this, ask me.
I am happy to help as I experienced this as frustrating :|

Why didn't formatting it dellete the partitions though? Thats what I don't get. I though formatting a hard drive removes partitions too.

Formatting doesn't affect the partition table, it only formats an existing partition.
