.Exe Runs on Windows7, Not on XP...anymore

Posted 20 July 2012 - 04:45 AM

we had a boo boo at the office. one of our designers was cleaning up his pc and decided to delete a bunch of "junk" in the directory on the network that we all run a toolbar from which we designed last year. suddenly things stop working and we have to do a recover from an image of the harddrive that was taken 2 nights before. now, the toolbar WAS running wonderfully on all of our pc's regardless of operating system. however, now it will not get past the splash screen on our only xp comp. strage thing is it WAS running before and assuming everything was backed up the same as it was i cannot figure out why it has decided to die. here's what he getting...

that's what i was going to do but im updating his .net framework as we speak, just an optional update from microsoft.

it may also help to know that we are not publishing the app we are simply building it on the network and running the .exe file through our CAD software. no install necessary

Well an ActiveX component that the app is trying to load simply isn't available on the machine (or some network location you mentioned)?

Do you not have the source for this anymore to see what/where it's loading from?

Hmm personally I would have everyone copy the program from the network to their machine, before running it. It will run a lot faster then, and it avoid any nasty errors from writing permissions, and it will probably give you a more specific error. Let me know how that works out compiling on the xp machine though. I have a database application that I designed for a server of mine, but placed it on my local network instead for easy access from multiple users. It blue screens the crap out of anyone that tries to run it from the network, but does not crash when they copy it. First off I'm not sure why it blue screens, but I do know it can't do what it needs to do from my network, despite updating security settings, changing code around, etc. Hope ya figure it out. :)

UPDATE: fixed.

the issue seemed to be backwards compatability. i went into the manifest and removed the requestedExecutionLevel line of code and boom goes the dynamite.
