Building Expertise - looking for advise...New Language to learn...

Posted 21 July 2012 - 09:38 PM

To whom it may concern,

i am a late 20s professional that have developed vb, vba, .net, sql skills a long the way. Roughly 2-3 years of programming 20 hours a week (partial responsibilty of my job updating old vb6 processes created by analyssts)

i have a dual degree in math and finance, and have programmed for a mutual fund and now a major corporation to automate processes in excel, access, and by aggregating data in txt files. I took C++ 2 semesters in college and pascal in high school for 2 semesters

i find myself wanting to expand myself to another language as i find VB very limiting because i feel like i am limited to windows...

i have been using android cell phones for 2-3 years (i know it sounds stupid) and have a real interest to learn android programming

i am finding that a good foundation in java is needed. i am also finding that having any experience in linux is good also...

last week i ended up whiping windows off my laptop and putting ubuntu and got eclipse with teh AVD up. but i really want to improve my programming ability to take myself to the next level. i know C# programmers are more in demand then VB programmers. but i dont see the benefit going from VB to C#...I see the most immediate benefit from going from VB to Java

Can somebody please school me on what langauges are needed to program cell phones, and to utilize real time data feeds and data base programming.

i know there are more then 1 way to skin a cat...so i figure i not only need to learn one language but eventually some type of scripting language in python or perl to be really considered a programmer...

thanks for the time!

It depends on the phone... iOS is lots of objective c... windows phones .net.. android - java.. so look into the mobile dev forum for the android section.. bone up on the threads and chatter going on.. work from there.. or just get a "how to program android phones" book and start crack'n..

Oh and for the love - make sure to read the pinned threads.

cell phone programming is more of a hobby/interest i have...

i guess can java be used to utilize and evaluate real time data feeds for instance stock market data for a particular stock

for instance AAPL stock real time data feed where your getting prices every .1 of a second

and evaluating momentum on direction of stock every 5 minutes

can java be used to do these types of techniques - i am trying to find overlap between programming cell phones and messing with more of my real career interests...i dont want to invest hours into java programming to find i can program cell phones but not do more immediate job needed things during my career progression...

No offense and I'm not spoiling for a fight but...
We're not here to be your research interns or Google bots just because you don't want to invest some searching time towards your own career future.

If you want to program iPhones look at the Apple iPhone development page. If you want to program Android, then look at that. If you want to program Windows Phone then look at that.

For crying out loud this information isn't closely guarded secrets by these phone makers: They want you to find it easily because it benefits them. There are a 1,000 web sites dedicated to this info. Any search on google or bing should have you tripping over yourself with excessive information.

and you write like this?

with teh AVD up...
i know C# programmers are more in demand then than VB programmers.

This is why my company doesn't care two hoots about degrees.

Personally I think the entire post smells of laziness:
  • Can't bother to do even basic Googling to get some background on each of the phones you're interested in
  • Can't bother to capitalize
  • Can't bother to spellcheck

Taken as a whole the post makes me think it was written by an eight grader, not someone who calls themselves a professional.

Side note - you didn't need to go all nuclear option on your hard drive.. you could have installed a virtual machine (I am partial to https://www.virtualbox.org/ ) and then just installed ubuntu on that.. but to each their own.

Am I missing a detail, or could he not have just coded Java on Windows?

You asked for advice. We don't blow smoke.

tlhIn`toq didn't just reply "Google it". He took the time to accurately answer your question, providing details & insight. You chose how to handle the response.

but'cha got some answers!

Didn't anyone tell you - programming, and dealing with programmers, is a lot like Thunderdome. The scene for Thunderdome was loosely based off a Michael Stipe acoustic song based on a droll IT convention?

I kid.. I kid.

This isn't about love; that's a different site.
You said this was about getting a job career and earning a living. For that the kindest thing we can do is be adult-level honest with you. You're competing for jobs against 5 million of your closest strangers just from this country alone. Half a million of them are users of this very site. So pointing out everything that will get your resume shuffled to the bottom of the interview scheduling stack *is* giving you some love.

Thanks for sticking up for me no2pencil.

im fine where i am at in life but wanted to learn a new language i have read a lot of sites, and looked at a lot of master programs

for instand masters in financial engineering...emphasize C++ more then java...through my research i think java is a better direction for my interest

but i wanted to casual ask you guys because i reference dreamincode.net randomly when i google for stuff im working on

id figure you guys would know or have some basic knowledge

i dont want to spend 100 hours learning C# to realize i should have went the java route
