Once I was talking to a physics professor, interested in doing research with him, and I said that Python was better for math than C++... only because Python can handle big numbers and C++ (without external libraries) can't.

Well not to be totally embarrassed, there is some truth to that. Python can handle larger numbers a little more gracefully. It is not that C++ can't do it, but it just takes a little more care and a little more caution.

For this reason a lot of scientists and mathematicians do like to use Python for their large number calculations.

I certainly prefer Python for math-y things because it's much simpler to use with large numbers.. or any numbers for that matter.

Well, I mean, Python is built with C++, so it *should* be able to. It's just that Python helps to abstract over the complicated processes that you have to manually take care of when doing the same thing in C++.

Really? Whew, then. At my school Python is taught at the first programming course, and only that one. I think that because of that some professors there think of it as more elementary than other languages, which made me look inexperienced when I said Python was superior for math.

Java syntax is too verbose. Its not the most suitable language for rapid prototyping or scientific applications. Sure it can handle big numbers using BigInteger, but just try doing complex calculations using that. The code will be too bulky.
