Google Fiber

Posted 26 July 2012 - 08:56 AM

There is going to be an announcement about Google Fiber (link) in just a couple of minutes. Anyone curious to see if they managed to get this project off the ground, how much it will cost the people in Kansas City and if they have plans to implement it anywhere else?

5mbps/1mbps free, or gigabit for $70/mo. Not bad at all.

We pay around $80 for cable and internet now. With all the rumblings that major ISPs have been doing about capping bandwidth limits (seriously, why ould you progress backwards) Google is doing a really smart thing by making this happen. You know its going to take off well in KCK and KCMO, and it will only be a matter of time before other major cities start seeing the same thing, if not from Google, then from other companies who are smart enough to realize that they better jump on this before Google completely takes over.

I really like their pricing plans to. I wouldn't hesitate to drop another $40 bucks for their gigabit internet and TV bundle, but I think its really neat that their going to allow people to pay $300 or $25 a month for standard speeds with the option to easily upgrade later. You say that I can switch over to you, get the same speeds I get with my current ISP and your going to lower my bill, and after I pay you a measly $300, I'll have free internet until 2020? With the option to switch over to fiber whenever I want? Shut up and take my money!

Please come to Columbus. Or as it may be in the next few years, the Massachusetts/New Hampshire area.

We (Columbus) actually submitted a video for it, obviously losing out to KC.

Live in Worthington, work in Hilliard

You only pay 80 for cable and internet? You must have WOW. I was stuck with insight switched to AT&T uverse - after a few $160 bills I decided to cut the chord on Cable all together and now have just Internet with a Roku box. Loving it so far.

We're in Reynoldsburg, and we have Insight. I've been with them for years except for a small stint when my wife decided that using Dish and AT&T DSL would be a better deal. Dish was pretty cool except for the readjustment of the satellites every week, and the AT&T sucked. Part of that was our fault because our apartment had baseboard heaters and we noticed that the internet connection would die out. We eventually traced that back to the phone wire hovering just above the baseboard heater was starting to turn brown. Also, their customer support sucked, and argued with me about why I was unable to get to my webhost server and email. Turns out they had a port blocked, and when I would ask them directly if that port was blocked, they would tell me that I had to log in to my AT&T email account to get email from sweetapathy.net. I told them they were dumb. We've since gone back to Insight, which I am more than happy with for the most part (I do with that I had Wireless-N instead of G, but that's not their problem). My only complaint is that their Digital Cable menus are quite ugly compared to Dish. Make the menus look better, and add some better selections to the Radio channels (Industrial please?) and I'd be happy as a clam. Still would love to have 1gbps parallel, though.
