I keep getting backlinks from what can only be classed as dodgy websites in Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Belarus, and every other country that seems to have spam as it's primary GDP contributor. Example:

That is a list of just the Russian websites linking to my website for this month, or rather, the number of people who have navigated to my site from those sites. I visit the sites, and they are largely Rule 34 sites, and look through the page source, and there is no backlink to my site.

Can anyone explain why this happens month after month, for years on end? I'm sure I'm not the only one who experiences this...

We get lots of Russian and Eastern European spam of an adult nature on DIC. We flag, delete, and IP ban these guys.

Just because they don't link to you now doesn't mean they didn't at some point. My assumption is that sites like that dynamically rotate their stolen/fraudulent content. They probably scrape the web periodically and display different content periodically or based on the requesting user agent, most likely using some kind of off-the-shelf spamware. Of course, I don't know that - I've never worked for a site quite that evil - but it seems like a reasonable guess.

I used to occasionally have this problem with pingback spam on my blog. The pingback implementation fetches the referring page and verifies that it actually links to my site before accepting the post, so the fact that the spam showed up at all means that the page must have linked to my site at some point. But when I went and checked manually later on, there was no sign of my domain. So clearly the content must have changed.

It could also be simply forged referrer headers. I've read that since some sites publish their referrer logs, spammers will occasionally try to get their sites linked to using those. So they'd just toss a few requests your way with the appropriate headers. I don't know how prevalent that is, though - you don't see too many people publishing their referrer logs anymore.

Either way, I wouldn't worry about it. It's not like you can do anything about it anyway, and even if you could it probably wouldn't be worth the effort. If it really bothers you, you could always block those referrers or IP addresses. But it'll just be a new batch next week, so if it's not doing any real harm I'd just ignore it.
