Our little place on the internet.

POPULAR

While browsing through reddit today I came across the following project:

http://internet-map.....85359191894531

It is a map of traffic for various domains. Dream in code is pretty big on the list relative to some other popular websites. I mainly wanted to share this with you and spark a conversation on interesting web projects that you guys have found or made recently that we may not be all that familiar with.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 10

You aren't kidding. I think I'll scribe a few of these addresses down!

What's the color code system?

modi123_1, I believe this answers the question:

Quote

Semantic web
The map of the Internet is a photo shot of the global network as of end of 2011. It encompasses over 350 thousand websites from 196 countries and all domain zones. Information about more than 2 million links between the websites has joined some of them together into topical clusters. As one might have expected, the largest clusters are formed by national websites, i.e. sites belonging to one country. For the sake of convenience, all websites relative to a certain country carry the same color. For instance, the red zone at the top corresponds to Russian segment of the net, the yellow one on the left stands for the Chinese segment, the purple one on the right is Japanese, the large light-blue central one is the American segment, etc.

Importantly, clusters on the map are semantically charged, i.e. they join websites together according to their content. For example, a vast porno cluster can be seen between Brazil and Japan as well as a host of minor clusters uniting websites of the same field or similar purposes.

why are we green...what color is green? also, we are really close to Wikipedia, which I feel speaks highly of our site given the close nature.

I like how the rules effectively made certain site's moons becuase they are smaller, closely related sites.

Wow, awesome application, really. Also, although it is certainly no secret that the internet is full of porn this really helps visualize things. It seems the more you go towards the outer fringes of the map the more fetishistic the porn gets. This demands more analysis :P

If you go north into russian-landia; yandex.ru is larger than google.ru. I didn't really think that it was that big I just knew that a lot of fake wordpress user emails are signed up to it and it sometimes crawls my websites.

Really cool. The outer fringes of internet space is monochrome though. I see a red spot and a yellow spot. Oh, the color code is for TLDs?

One neat thing is that it shows the old joke that the internet is mostly porn is false. Sure, there's still quite a bit, but the internet is dominated by non-porn sites.

how are they measuring? in pages? data sent? i read something in wired about the data that was being pushed by porn sites that tells me if that was the measurement it would blow everything else out of the water.

video sites like youtube and porn sites would probably dominate if it was done by data throughput. I bet the base it on page requests instead.

Every site is a circle on the map, and its size is determined by website traffic, the larger the amount of traffic, the bigger the circle. Users’ switching between websites forms links, and the stronger the link, the closer the websites tend to arrange themselves to each other.

I'm pretty sure it's page visits. He's probably grabbed data from Alexa or something like that to make this. Example:

http://www.alexa.com...reamincode.net#

The stats on that page are actually kinda depressing, like how we're most popular in India, our highest searched topic is "creating a browser in c#", our page load times are "Very Slow (2.987 Seconds), 85% of sites are faster."
