Can't be arsed to do the research, but I'd bet one of the items in favor of the change would be ease of scoring. I doubt very much that the possibility of an Aurora-style flipout played into it, but it'd be a fun rumor to spread.
I hereby give you permission to tell everyone that's why they did it.

I won't say drop everything and run to listen, but it's a good half hour of funny, so what the hell. Take a listen while you're doing the dishes or something.

Why would a worldwide event have the American national sport in it?
I mean, you don't see cricket as an Olympic sport either, do you?

This is another thing I don't get about this year's Olympics. Why are we called Team GB? Great Britain consists of England, Scotland, and Wales, yet we have players from Northern Ireland in there too. Surely it should be Team UK?

It's nothing new. We've been called Team GB since 1996.
I believe our full name is "the Great Britain and Northern Ireland Olympic team", but well that's a bit of a mouthful so they chose something that's closer to our international abbreviation GBR.
Also apparently when we originally registered our name with the IOC we were just called Great Britain, as Ireland didn't exist as its own country then and was part of Great Britain. Ireland then of course became a free state, but with the IOC we've still been Great Britain and so Team GB has stuck. I suppose there's a bunch of advertising bureaucracy that they have to think about now.

This makes sense, thanks Ryan
