Read datafile of trivia questions...

Posted 05 August 2012 - 04:53 PM

I'm writing a little trivia javascript web page and have about 2000 trivia questions along with answers, etc, that I want to store in a file on my server. I wonder if someone could tell me the best way to achieve this and whether or not the file of trivia questions will consume bandwidth every time a question is asked (i.e., whenever it is loaded by the same player) or whether the web browser will use a cached version of the file.

Many thanks.

The best way to do that kind of thing would be to store the trivia questions in a database on the server side, and then use AJAX to request whatever questions are needed when they are needed. It makes little sense to download all 2000 questions at one time, seeing as it's unlikely that a single user will have to use more than a portion of them.

As to the caching. A browser will usually cache pages and files it downloads from a server, and there are cache control methods you can use to encourage this behavior.

Most browsers have developer tools you can use to monitor the browser's network activity during development, so you can keep an eye on this there. For example, this is a snapshot of Chrome's developer tools. (Press F12 to get it to show.) Files loaded from the cache are listed with a 304 status code.

You should be able to store the questions in a text file and load it once with AJAX. Is should only effect the bandwidth one time when loaded, but that might depend on how you actually code the problem.

Show some code or a link to your code to see what could be suggested.
