Read into FTP. Also read into clear text authentication over a network. Realize how much of a blatant security risk this can be. Any skippie with wireshark at the right area can see your passwords and data fly by in clear text. Never touch FTP again.

Read into SFTP and SCP. They're based in SSH and come with built in encryption that keeps data safe.

Secure practices now, despite inconvenience, can save you far more in the long run if you do manage to have a sniffer prowling about.

Hmm I can't even tell if you're talking to me or OP. :( Would an intro to networks course be helpful with this sort of thing?

You would only need to have a program that runs that protocol. WinSCP runs both SFTP and SCP, and I'm pretty sure Filezilla has the same options.

SSH is the protocol that both are based inside. Read up on it and some basic Unix.

What else do I need to know before volunteering to upgrade/create sites?

I would talk with them and see how they want you to update the site, their policy on moving code from testing to production.. etc.. that can alter things.

Ok I will shoot them an email. I'm thinking the animal shelter, a bike shop (I emailed this one already but never got an answer even though I'm a regular customer there...), and another bike shop that doesn't even have a site. Just more stuff to put on my portfolio. ^^
