LAN connection between two laptops

Posted 09 August 2012 - 09:54 AM

Good day.

I am working on a game and I was thinking that perhaps it would be cool to add a "local" network connection multiplayer function. For example, if you have an ethernet cable and want to play with your buddy that has the game as well, you can connect the ethernet cable between the two laptops and you could join one or the others server and play together.

But that seems way over my head for a networking n00b, so I was wondering if someone could point me towards somewhere to get started with LAN networking, perhaps a simple chat program between two computers connected by an ethernet cable tutorial?

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Don't forget to search through our tutorials sections for questions like this. WolfCoder has a tutorial on this.

It would need to be a cross over cable, as you need a network device that can route the traffic. Without a router or switch you need to configure the laptops to communicate over a cross over cable.

I have a cable that I use to take internet from my air card on my pc and pass it over to my xbox so I can get on xbox live... does that sound like the right kind of cable?

No, a crossover cable is a special cable. The wires are basically switched around. RX > TX and TX > RX I think... You can make them yourself out of a network cable you already have if you wanted to. Instructions are all over. I have done it when I was in a pinch.
