Is Skype hackable

Posted 21 August 2012 - 10:36 PM

About two hours ago I accepted someone on my Skype as a friend and instantly my internet went down. I tried to connect on both computers, but could not connect. I believe this was some type of DDOS attack. Has anyone ever seen this happen before?

Anything that plugs into the wall is hackable, it's simply a matter of how long it takes.

By accepting a connection there's a link made between machines, allowing routing of traffic. If the host is malicious, it wouldn't be far fetched to think that it could render such an attack given any number of possible weaknesses that expose the end user.

Lesson to be learned: Don't talk to strangers. Stranger danger mate. (* - The irony of that line in a public forum...)

First time I heard accepting someone as a contact being an entry point for something malicious. In Yahoo Messenger the malicious stuff starts when you click on a link provided by someone.

I've heard about this before. Since Skype is a bit different from other IM programs, in that it is p2p, and not server based, like Windows Live Messenger or Yahoo Messenger. (Correct me if I am wrong).
I have an aquiantance that messes around a lot, mostly because he sees the computer world being a way of getting easy money (It should be noted that none of his projects works out), he claimed being able to retrieve IP addresses from skype, as soon as you start a conversation, and since a friend request on Skype, starts a conversation, that is probably enough.

Oh, good thing I don't Skype much. But really, that sucks. You add someone and your computer is now prone to outside malice? Did a bit of Googling and from this eHow article Skype security sounds applicable to Yahoo Messenger security, though it did not mention that you can get attacked just by starting a conversation.

I believe I should reiterate the concept of stranger danger here. Common sense is the first line of defense, and more often than not the strongest one.

My Skype is beamed through the air in a bajillion tiny pieces and reassembled on the other end. Like Wonkavision.

Prior to the Microsoft purchase, Skype was known to be pretty secure. I don't know if the MS purchase has changed anything for better or worse. Chances are that Skype itself wasn't hacked, but the hackers used the information from the Skype packets to start attacking your ports.

Yes I have done some research on this and it seems that when this person called me it gave him my IP of course because of the direct connection.
It seems Skype is not as secure as most may think...

Skype problems

Skype is saying this was a bug in an algorithm.... which to me sounds like a load of crap....
I am not sure if they meant this is what hacker exploited or if they are just lying.

I know for sure that I was attacked, and it was a DDOS attack, simply because the guy told me what he did after he did it.

I may just stop using Skype all together tbh....

It went the same way with grabbing any code from the internet and claiming it as your own and just running it. If it doesn't work, then come crying to DIC saying "It doesn't work."
