Posted 22 August 2012 - 11:26 AM

So my son's laptop just grey screened.

I get 2 beep codes real quick and nothing after that
no error message
swapped out ram with an older ram i had
I froze the hd thinking it might be that but I can hear it spinning up
swapped out hd's with an older one i had laying around
I was able to access the screen test briefly before the computer shut down.

basically nothing shows on the screen-- just stays gray

The 2 beeps are a code. These tell you what is failing with the hard ware. But just saying 'laptop' doesn't tell us what manufacturer to check with the beep codes.

You can try removing the memory, & when you power it up see if you get the same beeps. If you do, try re-installing the memory, one at a time if you can. If this doesn't correct the issue, try compatible memory from a known-working laptop.

1.) if it was a hard drive error, the laptop would still POST. The hard drive is not required for the laptop BIOS to enable.
2.) Never freeze a hard drive. Do you know why that works? Because it compresses the pcb, & allows (basically) a last read from the device if the solder spots are bad & the pcb doesn't make a good connection with the rest of the drive. It's ghetto repair, & is hell on the hard drive. If the problem is bad solder spots on the pcb, then you buy a new pcb, not dick around by introducing the platters (with the data) into an environment way colder than the clearly marked warning.

What was the beep code? There is likely a table out there that will help narrow down the problem.

What operating system was on it?
What manufacturer made it? (Apple, HP, Dell, etc.)

Based on what you are saying though it may be a motherboard issue. One thing you can do is check if any of the capacitors are blown (have bulged tops or battery acid coming out of them -- though this may be difficult / impossible to do with a laptop). Also, was the laptop on a surge protector? If not a surge could have fried something important (maybe power supply, or motherboard again).

Normally, if the harddrive fails it will either blue screen, or otherwise let you know that it wasn't able to find a bootable media device.

& so I'm supposed to go to dells website, & lookup pos. There are things called model numbers. They tell me what I can't see, because I'm not standing over your shoulder.

It's like you don't want help.

I have not seen capacitors on a laptop... since like forever. Just saying.

Also when caps blow, you don't generally loose post. It just bsod's & throws weird address errors. Nothing about the errors are ever the same. Just random... failures.

Model number?

Is this two beeps period or a series of two beeps? If the latter how many total beeps?

2 beeps
 No memory modules are detected
If you have two or more memory modules installed, remove the modules, reinstall one module (see Installing Memory), and then restart the computer. If the computer starts normally, reinstall an additional module. Continue until you have identified a faulty module or reinstalled all modules without error.
If available, install good memory of the same type into your computer (see Installing Memory).
If the problem persists, contact Dell.

now removing the memory and placing it one at a time should bring out the same result correct?

Whoa. I remember the first time I saw a capacitor in a laptop.

If you aren't getting an on-screen error message when you turn the computer on, it's something more serious than the hard drive. Think RAM, video, mobo. Because a laptop can be booted from optical drive or hard drive, you could just as easily pop in a bootable Linux disc and perform diagnostics before you go drastic with the deep freeze.

so here is the resolution...

I took the entire thing apart removed every removable piece. cleaned the entire thing with air and alcohol. put it back together and walla... a working laptop.
