Questions when Hiring a App Developer

Posted 22 August 2012 - 01:01 PM

I have a great idea for an app and I am starting to put the wheels into motion. The only problem: i have zero skills when it comes to the programming/development side. Marketing, Financing, Organization etc I have a handle on. I am starting to interview potential developers. Are there any key questions I should ask? I want my app to sort data and display it graphically, are there any languages ideal for this? Any other advice would be great.

Thanks

Yes. Key question to ask: "Are you available at 2AM Saturday morning when a mission critical bug has been found?"

Which is why should not be playing technical lead. You are not in a position to determine how to technically tackle this.

What you do want to do is document requirements and specifications, and then work with a developer to flesh those out, answer questions, etc., and get their proposal.

Checking out developers means checking out their references, past work, etc.

If you're looking to hire someone, then you're making the right move for app development. First of all, nearly all freelancing sites you can use (I recommend vworker), list the OS instead of the language most of the times. That way, you just need to post the job into whatever OS you want (like for you, Android and iPhone would be best - but remember, these are two different languages and you will have to pay for each). Before you do any posting though, make sure you know exactly what you want. I recommend drawing out what every page/item/thingy that you want in there in some sketch. You don't have to be an amazing artist, just something that will get the point across. Make sure to ask if they can do exactly what you want (with the drawings provided). Also, write a contract so your money doesn't get taken for nothing.
