Both.. depending on how long it was since the last change... page files swapped to the hard drive or just in ram. Why, does your homework ask for one single location?

Nowhere in particular. It's called Random-access Memory (RAM) for a reason.
Is there a specific problem you're trying to solve here, because this line of though isn't really going to be of any use troubleshooting anything.

Because you say "word" file, it's safe to assume this is a Windows system. Windows safes a current copy of the file in progress as a temp file, usually in the current working directory where the file is saved.
I've pulled the file from damaged flash drives before. The file name does not seem to hold any relevance to the current file in progress. I've also pulled these from the Windows system temp file.

Windows temporary folder in the hard drive that windows in installed in(most likely the C drive)
