Mead might be a hard sell, you'd end up with a bunch of drunk idiots who think they're drinking sour beer, aren't selective enough to stop even though they think that's what is being served to them, and who, after a pitcher or two, will drunkenly "NOT TAKE ANY MORE OF THIS SHIT" if they aren't corrected. Classic medieval brews are better for this, fortunately there are a lot to choose from. Also, you're going to need bouncers with battle axes.

I thought that was the point. If you're going for a theme based on a warrior culture, then shit needs to get rowdy and stupid toward the end of the night. And when people are that drunk, the bouncers really only need to be sober. Drunk people are easy to fight. Just move sideways a lot, they'll fall down.

Yeah. The most drunk are handed battleaxes and put in duels.

Or wooden staves. I would show up just to watch those battles. And by those battles I mean the titties.

Drunks are drunks. The vehicle they used to get that way is mostly irrelevant. No matter what varietal of alcohol you serve, even if it's just a short beer with an umbrella in it, you'll still have drunks. I've actually watched people get hammered on the non alcoholic punch...

There is no way in hell you'd confuse mead for beer, no matter how few brain cells are still firing. There's nothing sour about mead. Worst case, you can let it move into dry white territory. But decent stuff is supposed to be sweet. Throw in a little extra honey water to finish it off, just to be sure.

Sweet drinks will put you on your ass faster than the drier stuff. Still, drunks will be drunks.

I vote for bouncers with ax shaped pugil sticks. Fun for everyone. I agree with jon, I'd pay for that show.

I've had the best luck with quite dry meads - I use a champagne yeast and let it go to town on that stuff. I'm not much on the super-sweet, though.

I gave a friend of mine a load of mead a while back. He came back a few months later asking for "more of that Old Knicker-Dropper you gave me". It's nice when you convert all that sugar to something useful... :)

I've yet to actually taste it, but now I'm sure I'm going to have to brew some.

Oh, absolutely. You can buy meads from the higher-falutin' liquor emporiums, but it's extremely expensive and I don't find that it's always very good. (keep in mind that I like a dry mead - if you you like sweet, you're more likely to enjoy the commercial product)

Brewing mead is much simpler than brewing beer, and you can do it on a stove top. If you brew beer, you've got everything you need. If you don't brew, your gear list is not huge.

All this sounds like the average saturday night in my household. My mum can be quite embaressing when she pulls out the medieval gear!!!
All jokes aside, would this be a family joint? I could do with my son learning what a real woman is like (I just hopes his mother doesnt read this :gun_bandana: )

Most commercial meads suck. They're either pretending to be bad white wine or pancake syrup. It is one of the few drinks the home brewer can do much better than anything off the shelf.

That said, one of the best brewers I've ever known went commercial. He had to actually change the laws in PA to do it! We convinced him to do a production batch of the hibiscus and bought a case. It's one of the better sellers.

It's still a small operation, but I highly recommend Stonekeep Meadery if you can get it. If anyone actually orders any, tell Gavan that Wystan sent you. Hell, you might get a deal. ( He has no idea I just posted this, haven't talked to him since the kid, not a paid advertisement. )

I love mead! I usually drink it at renaissance festivals but I have batch of vanilla mead that'll be ready in April. Only 7 months to go. Honestly that's the worst part about doing it yourself. It takes a bit of patients.
