New Kindles Announced

Posted 06 September 2012 - 11:25 AM

I've been watching Amazon's press conference today (interesting because I like Amazon and because I work for them).

They announced a better e-ink base version at $69 with some performance improvements.

There is a new "Paperwhite" that still has an e-ink background but is backlit and has a higher resolution than its predecessors. Edit: this is $119

The new Fire is a 7 inch tablet for $159.99. This price point is very competitive against the Google Nexus 7, and you can bet Amazon has a better unboxing experience, technical merits aside =p

They also have a Kindle Fire HD, which is 10 inches, with some improvements to Wifi speed, anti-glare, and some other things that I don't know about because I've never owned a Fire.

I've been following the stream here:

I've resisted the Fire for a while because I had an e-reader (original "Fiona" Kindle) and a laptop. I might pick up one of the new Fires though, and I'm pretty sure I'm sold on the paperwhite for my general reading usage.

The nexus 7's unboxing was pretty nice. The box was closed and then it was open with the tablet staring at me.

I would have to read up more on this e-ink business... and would probably swing Nook over amazon kindle for a book reader.

I prefer the e-ink for reading myself - plus my neighbor had a hilarious problem with the Nook being full from the package.

And I guess you missed the hilarious Nexus 7 unboxing:

Sure, people are funny, but it doesn't take an entire Out Of Box Experience team to figure out you've made some errors.

Yeah my unboxing was - remove box from sleeve.. cut tape from box lid to box.. open.. I never really took much stock in the container my things are shipped in outside of "Did it protect the contents? Does it have all the parts?".

i'll be getting a kindle paper white for sure, (the $119 version)

probably not a kindle hd, but i gotta admit it's a step in the right direction and i LOVE how they keep lowering prices to make things competitive.

Then you don't... care about the unboxing experience, and this conversation has no merit? It's clearly a funny spot for many people who aren't you.

Huh?

New Nooks sometimes come with a wacky partition table.
They're cool, though. I've mostly avoided the color screen and stuck to the awesome e-inks, myself.

Odd - I haven't heard about their partitioning issues on the Nook.. but I would pass on the nook color for the plain ol' simple.

As I was saying... :D

I am stoked about the devices going down in price.. now if the damn books would follow suit and not be at the same price as my paperbacks.. *sigh*

i don't have any problems with books or movies being the same price (especially when i get a license to use on multiple devices, like i do on the kindle store), but it pisses me off when they are more though.

I agree. It annoyed me at first, but I honestly feel like I'm getting more for the digital copy. It's nice to take several books on a trip in one device.

Agree again. It may be more convenient for me, but it doesn't cost them shit.

Yeah I guess it's not super common. My grandmother has one and loves it. They're slick.

They are pretty cheap. I'm also on the "it's ok as long as they aren't more" bandwagon. My biggest annoyance is finding a poorly formatted e-version. Sometimes they just rip the pdf and put it online, which isn't really sufficient.

My friend was parading around his Kindle at his 30th birthday party the other day (he's a total tech geek). I have resisted the e-reader movement thus far, but at $69, I think I am dangerously close to caving.

I just always imagined having a library/study like this when I grow up:

so the idea of having them all on an external HD kind of disappoints me :angry2:

Plus it's kind of hard to have that "hidden doorway behind the bookshelf" when you don't have books.

I am a big fan of the bookcase steps.
