I can't make a favicon for some reason

Posted 10 September 2012 - 04:55 PM

I'm trying to add a favicon to an empty website, but the icon isn't showing up. I have no idea what's wrong with it; the html file and the ico file are in the same directory.

Here's my code

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">

<head>
	<meta content="text/html; charset=utf-8" http-equiv="Content-Type" />
	<title>Test</title>
	<link rel="SHORTCUT ICON" type="image/x-icon" href="test.ico"/>
</head>

<body>
</body>

</html>

What's wrong?

Your trying to display a custom icon for your site in the address bar of the browser? Shouldn't the icon be called "favicon.ico"?

I tried that, and it doesn't work. I'm pretty sure the name of the file doesn't matter as long as it's an ico file.

Everything I have read states it needs to be called favicon.ico.

This is the same line from the website I put together, and this one works fine.

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />

This also assumes you have the favicon file stored on the root (or base, or whatever the term is) folder for your domain, and not in any attached folders.
