"Bing" it

Posted 13 September 2012 - 12:00 PM

We all here know one of the most common verb-noun phrases : Google it! What about some of the others? Something is worth some money? Then you eBay it!

It seems that Microsoft was trying to do this with Bing. Microsoft admits that its campaign to turn ‘Bing’ into a verb has been a massive flop : Full Story.

What other web-related terms do we use? Amazon? YouTube?

"Ask the duck" so far has not taken off as a catch phrase, but that doesn't stop me from using it.

I love DuckDuckGo, I just wish it were more useful for programming related searches. I don't like how Google has it's greedy little finger everywhere I go and keeps showing me Google Quechua as if I were browsing from a mountain top in the Andes.

Check this out, Hawaii 5-0 massive "bing it" fail:

You can't always get what you want... SCSI is almost universally pronounced scuzzy, if pronounced at all. Apple wanted everyone to call it sexy. You see how that worked out.

I pronounce it "sea-kwall". Like: "A movie sequel."

LOL! Squeal?!? I love it. Sequel is the standard. But, good luck with yours.

If I'm talking about Structured Query Language, I pronounce it S - Q - L, but if I'm talking about the server suite of products from Microsoft, then I pronounce it sequel. Because SQL and SQL Server are very different things.

It's scuzzy. And sequel. And I don't care if you're searching on Bing, Yahoo, eBay, or Amazon - it's all googling in my world. :D

I don't know.. I hear bing in and out of the office.. though not as frequent as 'google it'.

Of course there's more old and generic ones.. like "Can you pass me a Kleenex, my box on my nighstand is empty". I think technical term is "facial tissue". Yeah.. facial.

Xerox for copy..

Aspirin was a real product name.. until it got away from Bayer and became a generic headache med name..

There's also ISA slots.. Some say it as a word and others say the characters.
