you can, of course, install each component separately.

I installed Apache, PHP and MySQL separately. Use Eclipse for PHP and Workbench for MySQL. If you want to do it that way I could perhaps help you out to some extent.

that depends on the system. most UNIX-like OS use a repository, which makes it relatively easy to handle. personal configuration might require some more skill.

Installing them separately isn't really that difficult. Assuming we are dealing with Windows here, I wrote a short guide for myself a short while ago, just so I wouldn't forget it. (Again)

Ah, I was under the impression that OP was using Windows. I was able to comfortably run Apache with PHP and MySQL on linux but I've heard some bad horror stories about it being much harder to setup on Windows.
