Killer Game Programming is a good book, but not for a "newbie" to Java. If you do decide to buy it, I"d also wait until the next edition comes out. This first edition was obviously written for 1.4.2 with Java 1.5 (Java 5) stuff added as sort of an afterthought. The info is in there, but you have to read through a lot of obsolete info to get to it. I do not recommend it.
