There's a lot of programming fundamentals that you'll need to learn over time, but you might as well get your feet wet playing with the emulator.

The reason is this: the basic language, java, is the same, but the android i/o model is completely unrelated to either console i/o or Swing. The changeover is likely to be quite confusing, unless you wait until you've become familiar with a lot of Java idioms, so I suggest you start out in the place you want to be, or else plan on spending a year doing groundwork. Sooner or later you're going to want to get really familiar with the basics of Java, but that can be a little later than sooner.
The trouble with this is that as far as I know there aren't any really great books for beginners to learn java through android, but there are some that aren't exactly bad.

Here's what I would suggest. Draw out the screens for the app so you know exactly what needs to go in there. Then start with some tutorials.
You could check out Microsoft Pluralsight developer training. It does cost money per month but it is well worth it, not only does it include Android, but also Java and Windows phones. You can get a 90-day free trial if you have an educational email account.

Hey Alan,
I recently did a lot of research for a post on how to learn Android online for free. For an absolute beginner I'd recommend checking out this upcoming Android course on Coursera, a 2012 Harvard course or these tutorial videos from a 5-day Android bootcamp.
